Popular Sunscreens Don’t Meet Standard Guidelines

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

It’s a surprise to see know that popular sunscreens don’t meet standard guidelines, especially at a time when people need it the most.

Many popular sunscreens don’t meet standard guidelines

A study that was recently published in the journal Jama Dermatology reveals that many sunscreen brands do not pass sun protection standards, therefore, are not effective in providing protection against the sun.

The study was conducted by a team of researchers from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in an effort to compare sunscreen brands and their capacity to provide sunscreen protection to its users.

The researchers looked sunscreen brands that belong to the top 1 percent of sunscreen products found in Amazon or about 65 different sunscreen brands.

Knowledge gap among consumers

“There is a gap in consumer knowledge on sunscreen,” says Shuai Xu, co-author and a resident in dermatology at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

One of the key considerations the researchers were looking at is to see if the labels conformed to the standards set by the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) based on three qualities;

Ø  The products need to be water-resistant, which means that it needs to adhere to the skin’s surface for up to 80 minutes before you need to re-apply additional sunscreen lotion.

Ø  Sun protection factor (SPF) of no less than 30. Which means the skin has 30 times longer sun protection before you start to feel your skin burn.

Ø  Broad-spectrum, which means that it should have the capacity to block ultraviolet A and B rays.

Upon checking the labels alone, Xu points out that 26 of the 65 brands failed to meet some or all of the AAD standards. And no less than 72 percent failed because they were not water-resistant, meaning it has the tendency to get washed off from the skin upon contact with water.

“Sunscreen as a product class is something greater than what you wear at the beach,” says Xu.

The study also included a wide variety of sunscreen products that were mostly made up of lotion or makeup.

To date, a study by Consumers Report claims that 28 out of 60 tested sunscreens did not match the label’s claim. A class action lawsuit has been filed on another popular brand that sports a protection of SPF 50 but when tested it only contained SPF 12.69.

This is an indication that many popular sunscreens don’t meet standard guidelines.

Why Dieters Love Instagram And How It Is Shaping Lives

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Why dieters love Instagram is not because of any strict diet rules, but a community of supporters and fitness questers who share their individual milestones by posting photos of their healthy culinary masterpieces and recipes.

Why dieters love Instagram is because of Whole30

Whole30 is an Instagram community that shares millions of visually stunning photos of sugar –free, gluten-free, dairy-free and alcohol-free food, sometimes even accompanied with milestone mementos of their bodies after a 30-day diet.

People have been using Instagram as a ‘fridge’ of sorts, where they often post online photos of their diet-inspired meals and recipes and for very helpful reasons that promote healthful eating and a healthy lifestyle.

No more worrying of losing fridge door space

What perhaps may be a less- complicated reason that this fad is catching on is the fact that it gives more people freedom to share and learn about fitness the more modern and far-reaching way.

Get a load of this, a community called #FitFam tops the list for the most number of posts on the healthy lifestyle niche with a jaw-dropping 46 million posts to date.

Take for example the #WeightWatchers community that already has 3.5 million Instagram posts to date- and counting. Another rave community where followers are subscribing to a Paleo lifestyle already has 7.5 million photos posted as of the last count.

“Not only do you want to feel like you belong to something bigger than yourself, but it’s important to stay connected so you have the accountability and motivation,”  says Melissa Hartwig, a professional nutritionist and fitness instructor who co-developed the Whole30 program back in 2009.

Hartwig points out that the program gives people the opportunity to connect online imbued with a sense of accountability and motivation, as well as develop among themselves a sense of belongingness as members of an online community.

The book Whole30 was published in 2015 and has already sold more than half a million copies.

Active social support

Active social support and getting it right away is the clincher for the Whole30 fitness community where one gets the adulation and well-wishes of people for posting a fitness milestone online. While those wanting to stay anonymous or maintain a sense of privacy could indulge in the inspiration of photos or recipes without being compelled to share or interact in the community.

This Vegan Strongman Does Not Eat Meat

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Vegan strongman Patrik Baboumian is exactly the opposite of what people generally believe to be the common stereotype for vegan dieters – skinny.

The badass vegan strongman breaks lifting records

Who would ever think that Baboumian, who is purely vegan – currently holds the world record for carrying the most weight by a human at a staggering 1216 pounds and is also reputed as “Germany’s Strongest Man” – a title he holds since 2011.

“I’m probably the most unthinkable vegan on the planet for several reasons,” says Baboumian, who developed his passion for weight lifting in his childhood back in the 1980’s.

“I always had that desire of being strong and being able to protect myself, being able to protect others,” says Baboumian.

Carnivore vs vegan

Baboumian didn’t start out a vegan but was a regular meat-eating person who used to love dairy products like milk which he would take 10 liters no less every day as part of his fitness strength training diet.

He said that when he decided to become a vegan, he struggled at first, not being able to perfectly commit to a pure vegan lifestyle due to his heavyweight mass nutritional requirements, thinking at first it might be difficult to maintain that same level of nutrition to match his training.

Form of advocacy

Baboumian points out that his decision to embrace the vegan lifestyle stemmed from his growing awareness on social responsibility regarding the environment and health, claiming that his eyes were opened to the reality that meat and livestock consumption contributes largely to the planet’s carbon footprint.

From there, Baboumian stopped eating any food that come from animals.

“I used to be an addict to milk, but thought that instead of feeding cows soy and then drinking their milk, why not just source my milk from soy and drink it directly,” Baboumian points out.

It was at this juncture that he then embraced a pure vegan lifestyle.

 For the better

Baboumian got the surprise of his life when his body took a turn with the unexpected.

“I got heavier, I got stronger, I won the European championship title in powerlifting, I broke three world records so everything was going perfect … my blood pressure went down, and my recovery time was so much faster so I could train more,” Baboumian muses. “Most people think if you are vegan you eat just green stuff, you just eat salad and lettuce and veggies the whole day … I’m eating beans, legumes, lentils and peas and rice and potatoes and a lot of things that have calories to give me the energy to do what I do.”

Stem Cells Could Stop Root Canals And Even Repair Teeth

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Soon you may be able to skip that dreaded visit to your dentist after scientists discover that stem cells could stop root canals.

Stem cells could stop root canals by fixing damaged teeth.

Researchers from the University of Nottingham and the Wyss Institute at Harvard University came up with regenerative dental fillings using stem cells inside the teeth to repair tissue.

With this new process, the tooth fillings are made of synthetic biomaterials that will be inserted into the affected area. The stem cells will then work their way to repair and regenerate the bony substance called dentin that comprise most of the tooth structure.

How stem cells work

Stem cells are part of the multicellular organism that is capable of producing more cells of the same type or from a certain cell type that gives rise to the production of different cells.

Simply put, it is the source of all cells from the brain, skin and the heart among many others that make up the human body.

They work to replace diseased, damaged or defective cells by actively dividing and producing new blood cells between two to six weeks to stimulate regeneration of new and healthy cells.

Bad teeth health habits

Using the teeth to nibble on the some stubborn finger nail can be dangerous and could cause one to get sick. Since it is the most openly exposed part of the body, it often becomes a ground of harmful bacteria than can be transmitted from one person to another,

Lack of drinking water for rehydration. This is also one revolutionary capability which means that the having ample water does not only serve to cool the mouths, but can also become breeding grounds for all sorts of harmful bacteria. Drinking water regularly helps prevent bacteria from damaging the teeth.

Brushing the teeth too much. It can cause abrasions on the tooth enamel, exposing the teeth to harmful diseases and even cause to dental and gum problems.

Eating and drinking acidic foods. Foods high in acids like citrus fruits, vinegar or fruit juices can cause the tooth’s enamel to erode.

Using the teeth as ‘tools’ to open bottle caps or using it for cutting non-food items. Using the teeth for something else other than eating wears it out and causes it to deteriorate faster and even subject it to certain diseases.

Some Manufacturers Best Before Dates Wasted Lot’s Of Edible Food

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

The notion behind manufacturers best before dates is responsible for this unnecessary food waste by Americans alone, according to current estimates by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Manufacturers best before dates are not expiration dates

This looming problem is primarily caused by a seemingly misinformed public who unknowingly dispose of food which they deem ‘expired’ when in fact it still isn’t. Thanks to manufacturer use by dates that consumers think are the expiry dates and discard food when it is still safe for consumption.

These dates, according to many US consumer reports, may seem to be telling different dates whether as best before, use by and expiration among others, are in fact not precisely designed to fit the bill.

The USDA report pointed out that the estimated figures were based on data from retail and consumer levels. This is an indication that there is a need to make proper adjustments to clear up this

No uniform system

Admittedly, authorities believe that food manufacturers are not compelled to adopt a uniform system to indicate which type of date to list on their product or if they even need to have the specific date in their products.

To address this concern, Congress may soon ratify the Food Date Labelling Act of 2016 which aims to provide specific guidelines on the date labelling process.

Same issues with other countries

It seems like this problem is not isolated to the US alone. In a similar study from the United Kingdom, researchers also noted the same concern in British households. The study reveals that an average household composed of four family members waste around $275 to $455 every year.

The study reveals that such confusion was responsible for some 91 percent of consumers who discard food based on their ‘sell by’ date. This date label does not actually refer to the product itself, but a way for retailers when they could rotate their inventory.

Big challenge

Food authorities are facing a big challenge regarding this concern as there are currently no exact means by which to tell the exact dates when food is safe for consumption or when food is already unsafe to eat.

But with the passing of the new bill to improve the date labelling guidelines, the public may soon see a more accurate detail to help the consuming public become more aware of this problem and save up on billions of dollars annually due to wasted food.

Other countries are also expected to follow suit in order to create awareness regarding manufacturers best before dates and put an end to this concern once and for all.
