Obesity Risk In Youth Found To Be Revealing

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Obesity risk in youth was found by scientists by comparing the amount of gut bacteria among healthy youngster and those that were diagnosed as obese.

Obesity risk in youth becoming very alarming

This, after researchers from the Department of Pediatrics at Yale University, New Haven recently published findings in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, reveal that the research that obese children have certain types of gut bacteria that could not be found among healthy children.

In their study of 84 children and adolescents aged between seven to 20 years, composed of seven overweight, 15 who weighed normally, 27 obese and 35 severely obese.

Blood samples were taken from the participants to determine the population of gut bacteria in the intestines, as well as for assessing levels of short-chain fatty acids believed to be formed by certain types of gut bacteria.

“These data try to explain the physiopathology behind the relationship between gut flora and obesity. In future, the identification of species underlying this association might lead to targeted treatments,” says Dr. Nicola Santoro, who is the lead author for this study

Different groups of gut bacteria

The samples showed eight groups of bacteria associated with specific levels of body fat.

They also found that 4 of the 8 groups of gut bacteria thrived in the intestines of children found to be obese and up.

While their study served proof of a negative foreboding, still the researchers believe that this will help spur other research to find ways to combat obesity among children.

In a separate study published by the University of Kansas Medical Center, researchers documented that individual differences in brain stimulation among children through media advertising, especially with food products in relation to brands and logos.

Study author Dr. Amanda Bruce, assistant professor of behavioural paediatrics, points out that children are excessively exposed to food advertising- including junk food- and are directly influences their food choices and stimulated brain activity.

This includes the ‘wholesome’ images and youth-inspired enticing commercials that advertise these products. Marketing junk foods in this manner greatly impacts the choices of children and increases the risk of childhood obesity.

“Food commercials may prompt children to consider their liking and wanting of specific food items, irrespective of the lack of any health benefits. This increased emphasis on taste may make it even more difficult for relevant caregivers to encourage healthy food choices. This evidence has implications for policies related to food advertising to children,” says Bruce.

The Center for Disease Control reports that obesity rates among children more than doubled and an alarming four-fold increase among adolescents in the past 30 years.

NHPs Are Not Drugs

http://nutritionclub.ca/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/send-letter-button.png

Health Canada has recently launched the Consulting Canadians on the Regulation of Self-Care Products in Canada document. Previously referred to as the Consumer Health Product Framework, this document has changed dramatically since its original inception, and proposes that, in the future, many natural health products (NHPs) be regulated using the same rules as drugs.

We want to make one thing clear: natural health products are NOT drugs.

Changing the entire regulatory system based on a single public opinion poll and six weeks of consultation is irresponsible.

This hasty consultation is in stark contrast to the previous consultation on the regulation of NHPs, carried out by the Standing Committee on Health (SCOH).

The SCOH met with hundreds of witnesses, including consumer groups, Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, international regulators, and received hundreds of submissions over a half year review period. It set out a robust and thoughtful framework for the regulation of NHPs that resulted in the passage of the NHP Regulations and the establishment of the NHPD (now NNHPD).

Canada is already a global leader in the regulations of NHPs, let’s move forward instead of back.

Our current pre-market approval system respects traditional values from many different cultures and allows Canadians freedom of choice and access to these important products. Changing the current NHP Regulations is trying to fix a system that is not broken.

Natural health products shouldn’t be regulated like drugs. Natural health products are different in nature from drugs and must be treated differently.

Please click the button below to send a letter to your local Member of Parliament, urging them to make your views known to the Minister of Health.

Keep Your Stomach Lean Through Exercise And Diet

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Keep your stomach lean by always making sure that you take really good care of what you put in it, as well as the steps that you take to maintain it.

Keep your stomach lean with the right diet and exercise

A lean stomach is always associated with having a lean body. And that is true. The presence of fat that shows on your stomach is a visual sign of the amount of fat that you have. Meaning, those bulging love handles are actual signs of excess fat in your body.

People always associate fat loss with workout and it’s true, but sometimes there are people who need to understand that eating habits also contribute to it, so reach fat loss goals faster by focusing on how you eat and how you can try to get around it.

But mind you folks, the body needs fat. What it does not need is excess or stored fat. Just having the right amount of fat in the body is enough to keep you going and staying healthy.

Lose excess fat by eating right

Yes, you can reach your fat goals fast by eating right and doing it right. Having the right foods to eat is more than just eating it, you need to have at the right amounts and at the right time.

Here are some helpful tips to help you manage your eating habits and achieve your fat loss goals.

Chew your food well

Slowing down and chewing your meal slowly helps the brain get the message that you are feeding yourself properly and that in time you will be able to feel full enough to stop eating. The longer you take your time to eat, the greater chances the brain receives the signals that you are feeding. Also, taking more time to chew on your food allows you to savour it well and feel satiated right away.

Drink before you eat

It pays to ask for a glass of water before ordering your food in a restaurant. Water fills your gut and signals your brain that it is part full, thus signalling your brain to get less portions off the menu.

Proteins first

With the same mindset, ordering proteins first gives you less chances of chomping down on your starches like pasta or breads. You can order steak, fish, or any protein-rich foods and start with that.

Follow this up with healthy fats

Getting your healthy fats first also lets you think less of your carbs or starches. Load op on fish like salmon for omega 3 fatty acids, cold pressed vegetables, nuts and fruits.

Healthy fats are good for the heart, hormone regulation, fat metabolism and energy production. Just make sure not to eat too much.

Carbs for training

You don’t have to miss out on your carbs, because you can take it during training to help you get more fuel for workouts and exercise routines. Get the right amount of carbs enough to keep you going for your training.

Avoid hunger

When you start to feel the pangs of hunger, eat right away. It is recommended to prepare your meals and snacks ahead. Your healthy choice would be your prepared snacks, instead of running over to the next burger joint and chomping down half a dozen burgers.

Eat real and whole foods

Although nutritional supplements help provide you with the nutrients needed, it may not be enough to fill up your gut. Do not skimp your regular meals and substitute it with supplements because you might end up bingeing or taking in more than what is required by the body as you crave food.

Exercises that guarantee a lean stomach

Here are some of the most effective fat-busting exercise moves that can help you maintain a lean stomach.

Reverse Tabletop with Crossover Twist

As you sit with the hands placed behind the back and fingers facing forward, place the feet a foot-width apart with knees bent. Press down with the hands and feet as you lift the hips to form a flat tabletop from the knees to shoulders.

Hold the position at the top and then begin to slowly lift one foot up and over the hips while you reach across your body using the opposite hand to reach the toes. Upon returning to the starting position, perform the same movement using the other foor and arm.

Make sure to keep the hips elevated to engage the glutes and core muscles.

Twisting Windmill Boat Pose

This routine also helps to strengthen the spine and obliques. On a seated position with knees bent, lift the legs in front until the shins are parallel to the floor. Slightly lean back with a straight spine to balance the body and extend both arms straight at the sides.

With the legs and lower body stable, twist your upper body to the right as you sweep both arms up to the ceiling then back to shoulder level. Continue the twists for both sides with the same arm motion.

Twisting Side Plank

This works the upper body, core and legs bringing in lots of neuromuscular stimulation.

Start with a side plank position with the shoulders, hips and knees stacked and the elbow right under the shoulder. Place the top hand behind the head and elbows pointing towards the ceiling and lift the top leg with the foot flexed.

Slowly twist to reach the top elbow to the floor without breaking the form then return back to the starting position and complete the reps on side before alternating to the other.

Planking Frog Legs

This forces the core to stabilize the hips and torso as the legs are moving

Using a gliding disc, place each foot into each disc and assume a plank position with the elbows under the shoulders and head as the hips and heels are aligned.

Bend the knees and slowly drag both feet towards your chest by engaging your core then push them out in a circular motion as if doing the breaststroke. Do not use the knees to drag the feet but make sure the core is engaged in doing it.

Repeat the steps slowly to maximize the tension.

Single-Legged C Bend

Stand up with the legs together and reach up to the ceiling with palms pressed together. Lift the right knee in front of you until it is at hip level. Shift your weight to the left slightly to balance.

While shifting to the other side, make a C form with your outstretched hands. Return to the starting position without lowering the lifted foot then repeat the steps as mentioned. And complete the repos on one side before shifting to the other.

The Power Of Turmeric May Help Prevent Breast Cancer

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

The power of turmeric indeed wields very strong properties that it contains a very potent antioxidant that not only helps treat pain, but is also good for preventing a lot of diseases, including cancer.

The power of turmeric can be found in curcumin

As many people would know, turmeric is a root crop indigenous to most countries in South Asia and is a popular ingredient in the many cuisines around Asia and even made its way to many countries in Europe like Britain and France.

Turmeric is a root crop that resembles that of ginger, except that it has a rich orange hue and is also used as a main colouring agent for dyes.

Powerful weapon against breast cancer

Professor Martin Widschwendter and his research team from the University College, London, recently undertook an experiment regarding the effects of turmeric in preventing breast cancer among women.

This was based on several studies that show curcumin, a strong antioxidant ingredient found in turmeric has been successful in inhibiting breast cancer cells from metastasizing into full blown cancer.

The development of breast tumour cells to cancer is called DNA methylation, which scientists believe that when intervened just before it activates the cancer cells it can be reversed and prevent cancer from happening.

Together with British news outfit BBC, Widschwendter conducted an experiment  involving almost 100 participants that were grouped into three.

One group was asked to take in a teaspoon of ground turmeric powder mixed with food daily for the next six weeks. Another group was made to take it in supplement form with a dosage similar to that of the first group and the third group was asked to take a placebo without them knowing it.

Surprising results

The experiment yielded no effects on those who took turmeric as a supplement and more so with those who took the placebo agent. However, what astounded the researchers was the fact that it dis show significant results on those who took turmeric mixed with food.

“There we saw quite substantial changes. It was really exciting, to be honest. We found one particular gene which showed the biggest difference. And what’s interesting is that we know this particular gene is involved in three specific diseases: depression, asthma and eczema, and cancer. This is a really striking finding,” says Widschwendter.

But why its effects when mixed with food and not when taken directly?

Newscastle University senior lecturer Dr. Kirsten Brandt who took part in the experiment believes that it may have something to do with how it was taken in.

“It could be that adding fat or heating it up makes the active ingredients more soluble, which would make it easier for us to absorb the turmeric. It certainly gives us something, to work on, to try to find out exactly what’s happening,” says Brandt.

She adds that more research needs to be done to explore the other benefits of turmeric, however, the team collectively agree that this is proof that turmeric is indeed good for the body.

Why Stress Erases The Benefits Of Good Fats

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Why stress erases benefits of good fats may be largely due to the body’s response that affects proper metabolism, as well as may be the reason why stress eating could also become a problem.

Why stress erases benefits of good fats seems like a biological response

In a recent study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, researchers from the Ohio State University in Columbus reveal the first study to delve into the effects of stress in affecting healthy eating habits.

Study author Jan Kiecolt- Glaser, a professor of psychiatry and psychology at Ohio State, points out that stress can indeed have adverse effects on eating healthy fats, like Omega 3 fatty acids and many nut varieties.

Although Glaser and her team were aware about the effects of poor diet and stress can exacerbate inflammation linked to diabetes, heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis, they wanted to further delve into stress and explore the possibility of measuring it in the bloodstream.

Meal tests

The study was conducted by the team with some 60 female participants with 38 of them having survived breast cancer and were at an average age level of 53 years.

They were asked to randomly eat any one of two breakfast choices provided for them, one was of biscuits and gravy with eggs and the other one was turkey sausage made with saturated fat from palm oil or a similar breakfast with the same nutritional values made with monounsaturated sunflower oil.

Out of all the participants, 31 of them came out with stress factors regardless of the nature or severity .

When blood samples were taken, the research team focused their attention on two primary indictors of inflammation – C-reactive proteins and serum amyloid A.

The results showed that those who ate food with saturated fat had higher levels of of all the markers identified and compared to those who had their meals made with sunflower oils.

“These data show how recent stressors and a [major depressive disorder]history can reverberate through metabolic alterations, promoting inflammatory and atherogenic responses,” says Glaser.

They did that unless stress is reduced and minimized, it will continue to affect health based on the hard evidences that show its effects on the body.

Workplace stress is included

Studies show that there are indeed a lot of health-related concerns that are associated with workplace stress resulting to high employee turnover, absenteeism, low productivity, low morale and low motivation, among others.

Wellness and preventive medicine can help reduce healthcare costs

“Health care costs to a company are now a major issue, whereas it used to be an afterthought,” says Dr. Tim Church, a preventive medicine specialist and chief medical officer for ACAP Health Consulting. “As health care costs continue to skyrocket, it’s the American employers who are taking the brunt of these costs.”

Work-related stress, according to an extensive study by the University of Cambridge points out it can largely impact physical, emotional, intellectual and behavioural issues among people.

These conditions include sleep problems, headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, erectile dysfunction and a whole lot of other medical conditions.
