Breaking News: Processed Meat Bad For Asthma

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Eating processed meat might make asthma worse, researchers said. The study, published in the journal Thorax, suggests that consuming more than four portions a week can increase your risk. Nearly 1,000 French subjects were included in the research.

The scientists believe that nitrite might be the culprit. It is a preservative found in common meats like sausages, salami, and ham. It aggravates the airways, making symptoms even worse.

Processed Meat ‘Could Be Bad For Asthma’

Rather than worry about one type of food, people should be eating a healthy and varied diet, they advise. Processed meat has already been linked with cancer. Read more…

Daily Mail UK reports that the study chose 971 participants with asthma. They were monitored for over four years. It was found that 14% who ate processed meats once a week had worse symptoms. 20% of those who ate it four times  a week found that their condition was deteriorating. Those who ate it more than four times, the percentage was 22.

The results imply that at least 5.4 million people in the UK with asthma problems could face a greater risk if they don’t limit their consumption of cured or processed meats.

Why Eating Ham Or Sausages Four Times A Week Could Worsen Asthma

The experts, from Paul Brousse Hospital in Paris, tracked 971 people and monitored diet and asthma symptoms such as ease of breathing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Read more…

Health experts encourage people to cut down on processed meats as part of a healthy diet. The thing is, a lot of adults and even children like to eat these foods. Regularly indulging in bacon sandwiches and other foods of the same kind may potentially double the risk of an asthma attack.

Obesity plays a role in this too. It may influence symptoms such as increasing inflammation throughout the body that could affect the lungs. The researchers made adjustments in their analysis.

Diet Rich In Processed Meat ‘May Worsen Asthma Symptoms’

The researchers think compounds called nitrites, which are used to preserve meat, might be the culprits, as they have been linked to inflammation in the airways. Read more…

The researchers admit that they still haven’t established the connection and they require further investigations. Though this is the case, it gives individuals a hint to take a watchful approach when it comes to their food intake.

Age Of The Brain: Is This Actually The Same With Your Physical Age?

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Yes, you’re considered an adult when you reach the legal age of 18, in most countries. However, if you’re looking at a scientific perspective, adulthood is like a mystery that remains unsolved.

Neuroscientists admit that they do not know when exactly adolescence ends and when adulthood begins. Not based in your physical body of course, but more on your brain age.

You’re An Adult, But Some Experts Might Disagree

Even neuroscientists don’t know when adolescence ends and adulthood begins in the brain — after all, our brains are constantly changing, according to a new opinion paper published in the journal Neuron b Wednesday. Read more…

Science Daily says that different parts of the brain mature at different rates. It doesn’t grow up entirely overnight. A psychologist finds that defining maturity is more complex and challenging.

Leah Somerville a, a Harvard psychologist, says that using neuroscience tools to determine when a brain “reaches maturity” is much trickier than it may seem. Researchers should reach a consensus about what would define “maturity” in the first place.

The Challenge Of Defining Maturity

While the law has to draw a line between adolescence and maturity, ranging globally from 10 to the early 20s, different parts mature at different rates, rather than growing up entirely overnight.” Read more…

New York Times says that the importance of brain maturity is relevant to a lot of legal questions. The right age for voting, be subjected to law, informed consent: these are just some of the issues presented.

People like Dr. Somerville have been through a lot of research for the past few years. They’ve learned a great deal about it and how it works. However, the challenging scene that’s about to unfold doesn’t have a clear cut line that policy makers would want to have.

Does Age Define Maturity?

Leah H. Somerville, a Harvard neuroscientist, sometimes finds herself in front of an audience of judges. They come to hear her speak about how the brain develops. Read more…

The development of these networks is still pretty unclear. They haven’t established how these influence behavior. Dr. Somerville said that it’s essential for the researchers to get a bigger picture of how this major organ progresses. They would have to conduct large-scale studies to monitor its development.

A Medical Innovation: Laser Treatment For Prostate Cancer

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

The significance of this kind of therapy has been elaborated by Professor Mark Emberton explains on Radio 4’s Today. The surgeons deemed the new treatment as truly transformative. This was tested across Europe. It uses lasers and a drug that’s made from deep sea bacteria which kills of tumours. The best part: it doesn’t have severe side effects.

BBC.com reports that the trial was conducted on 413 men. The response was quite positive. Nearly half of them exhibited no trace of harmful CA cells. The study was released in The Lancet Oncology.

Prostate Cancer Laser Treatment ‘Truly Transformative’

Lifelong impotence and incontinence are often the price of treating prostate cancer with surgery or radiotherapy. Up to nine-in-10 patients develop erectile problems and up to a fifth struggle to control their bladders. Read more…

EN Gadget explains that current therapies are usually associated with aggressive side effects like impotence and urinary incontinence. Those who participated in the trial no longer experience side effects after two years.

The term used for the therapy is “vascular targeted photodynamic therapy (VPT).” This project was developed by scientists from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and private company STEBA Biotech. The process of administering treatment gets pretty creative

Prostate Cancer Laser Treatment Cures Half Of Trial Subjects

To top it off, unlike with current, aggressive therapies that can cause impotence and urinary incontinence, most of the subjects were free of side effects after two years. Read more…

The drug that’s prominently used in the procedure is from a certain bacteria found in near total darkness on the ocean floor. Get this: it becomes toxic only when exposed to light. This is quite intense.

Ten fiber optic lasers are introduced into the prostate. If you switch this one, the laser activates the drug which eventually kills the cancer cells without harming the prostate.

Professor Mark Emberton, initiated the strategy at University College London. He says that this is a breakthrough in the treatment of cancer. The possibility of using the treatment can shift from prostate to breast cancer.

Prostate Cancer Treatment Called ‘Transformative

Many prostate cancer patients who have surgery or radiation therapy have lifelong impotence and urinary incontinence. But sexual and urination problems lasted no longer than three months among patients who had the new therapy, according to the study in The Lancet Oncology. Read more…

This breakthrough changes the field of cancer therapy. It is something that we should look forward to. The results are quite promising, and hopefully, they’ll be able to do something about making this available for the public.

How Do You Track Hidden Heart Disease?

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

WB News says that there’s an affordable way to check if you’re at risk of a heart attack. This is a blood test that can predict which healthy patients are prone to have an attack. Experts explain that it could be an even better assessment than checking blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

They have only conducted this on men but the British Heart Foundation-funded researchers say that it should work on women as well. The test is called troponin. It looks for a protein that’s released when the heart muscle is damaged.

Blood Test For Hidden Disease

Doctors already use the same blood test to help diagnose men and women who they suspect have just had a heart attack. But researchers from Edinburgh and Glasgow universities say it should be used to help patients avoid ever reaching this point. Read more…

BBC.com says that Prof Nicholas Mills and colleagues discovered that the men who had increased levels of troponin in their blood were more likely to have an attack or die of the disease 15 years later.

In order to circumvent this, patients should undergo preventive treatment. This means taking cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) in order to decrease the risk as well as their troponin levels.

Trace the Hidden Disease

The 3,300 men in the study had high cholesterol but no history of heart disease.

The scientists now plan to do more research involving women too. Read more..

Huffington Post says that the protein presence in the bloodstream are excellent markers as this is highly linked to heart problems. The test is currently used to confirm heart attacks that were suspected to have happened.

Professor David Newby explains that troponin acts like a barometer of health. If it goes up, it means that it’s getting bad and your risk of heart conditions increases. If it goes down, it means that you’re all good.

A Cheap Blood Test Could Reveal If You Have A Hidden Disease

Professor David Newby, said: “Troponin is almost like a barometer of heart health. If it creeps up, that’s bad and your risk of problems increases. If it goes down, that’s good.” The study, which was funded by the British Heart Foundation, looked at 3300 participants over a period of nearly five years. Read more…

This is another preventive measure when it comes to maintaining cardiovascular health. For those with existing conditions, it’s something that can be quite beneficial.

New Study Instills Doubts On Sugar Guidelines

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

NPR.org says that the study was an industry-funded research. It is questioning the proof behind the guidelines for daily sugar intake. Even experts call the study’s findings controversial. It may be an attempt to challenge the scientific agreement about the recommended sugar intake.

The WHO and the U.S. Dietary Guidelines have been encouraging people to consume not more than 10 percent of daily calories from added sugar. This means that drinking more than one can of soda puts you over that restriction.

How Much Is Too Much? New Study Casts Doubts On Guidelines

An industry-funded study questions the evidence behind guidelines for daily sugar intake. Public health experts call the controversial findings an industry attempt to undermine scientific consensus. Read more…

According to the New York Times, a well-known journal published findings that question the global health advice to lessen sugar consumption. The warnings about cutting on consumption are based on weak evidence, the study argued.

The research quickly gained criticism from health experts. That’s because the study authors are mostly affiliated with big food and sugar industry companies. This was funded by companies including Coca-Cola, General Mills, Hershey’s, Kellogg’s, Kraft Foods and Monsanto.

Study Tied to Food Industry Tries to Discredit Guidelines

But the review, published in The Annals of Internal Medicine, quickly elicited sharp criticism from public health experts because the authors have ties to the food and sugar industries. Read more…

The French Tribune says that lead author Bradley Johnston carefully examined the studies and the methodology used to come up with the guidelines. He disagrees and he claims that these are not trustworthy.

He explains that it is a smart choice to limit sugar consumption for people. However, it still raises the question about the exact amount to limit.

This has gathered quite an audience from the health community. Experts say that this is another stunt to destabilize scientific evidence. Prof. Marion Nestle says that this is another scene from the tobacco industry playbook: cast doubt on science.

New Study Casts Doubts On W.H.O.’S Guidelines

Lead author Bradley Johnston, an epidemiologist at the Toronto-based Hospital for Sick Children, reviewed the researches and methodology used to generate those guidelines, and argued that the guidelines are not trustworthy. Read more…

Though two sides are having a scientific battle, let’s prioritize our health and keep a good conscience when it comes to our dietary intake. Being cautious has its own benefits.
