Having pancakes oozing with maple syrup for breakfast may be your best choice of a healthy and smart start to your day – as studies show that maple syrup may protect your brain from damage.

A recent study released by the American Chemical Society during their recent annual meeting announced findings on the beneficially positive effects of maple syrup and how it can be linked to protect brain cells from damage – especially on cushioning effects of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease.

The research team consolidated 24 different study results that focused on brain health,  through proper nutritional diets and saw the pattern of the benefits of the protective effects of maple syrup in the brain.

But researchers were quick to note that this were syrup derived from natural means through the sap of the maple tree and not the synthetic ones that are usually found in stores.

They found out that substances present in maple syrup has significantly prevented at least two types of proteins – beta amyloid and tau peptide- in brain cells that clump together resulting to brain damage that has also been found to be the cause for Alzheimer’s disease.

The studies have shown that the phenol concentrations found in maple syrup are responsible for inhibiting these proteins from clumping together in the brain, thus, prolonging the life of Alzheimer’s patients.

Studies have yet to prove is these compounds in maple syrup can also have regenerative properties that may try to repair the damage to brain tissues caused by these proteins.

Natural products such as green tea, red wine, berries and pomegranates remain to be studied for their potential benefits against Alzheimer’s , “ according to Dr. Navindra Seeram, the lead researcher from the Texas State University.

Dr. Seeram added that in preliminary laboratory-based Alzheimer’s disease studies, it shows that maple syrup from phenolic-enriched extracts  sourced from Canada were proven to exhibit neuroprotective effects  similar to an antioxidant compound found in red wine called resveratrol.

Dr. Seeram sair that this holds a lot of promise for those suffering from the disease and may even be beneficial to help other forms of brain function disorders as well.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain degenerative disorder usually associated with aging and oxidative stress in the brain.

Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States and is belongs to the top ten list of deaths in America that could not be prevented or cured.
