It’s not easy to mend a broken heart and if one has to go through a phase of experiencing one, then better take extra care as studies have recently showed that a ‘broken heart” caused by the loss of a loved one could result to heart problems or even death.
A new study recently published in the medical journal The Open Heart, revealed that the loss or death of a spouse or partner could be associated to people developing irregular heartbeats, increasing their risks of developing a heart attack or a stroke.
The study was conducted by a research team from the Aarthus University in Denmark, where the team extensively studied thousands of grieving participants who were believed to be at serious risk of effects due to heartbreak.
The researchers were looking at the some 88,612 participants diagnosed with atrial fibirillation – a condition where someone experiences irregular heartbeats- and compared them with some 886,120 healthy participants in a control group.
The test showed that the loss or death of a partner was associated with people that have a 41 percent increased risk of developing the condition for the first time, compared to those who have not experienced loss- regardless of gender or age group.
The risk of heart attacks or stroke peaked at about eight to fourteen days from death and showed signs to was subsiding after almost twelve months.
The study also discovered that those under the age of 60 were twice as likely to develop atrial fibrillation than older people and that the sudden unexpected loss of a healthy partner was 57 percent more likely to develop irregular heartbeat.
The study further noted that atrial fibrillation has been linked to higher risks of stroke, heart failure or even death and the risk of acquiring this condition is between 23 to 30 percent in Western countries.
Atrial fibrillation is one of the high risk factors for stroke and increases the risk of an attack five-fold.
Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, as well as the leading cause of serious, long-term disability in the United States.
Every year, some 795,000 are reportedly suffering from the disease and nearly 78% of stroke attacks for people over the age of 65.
Currently, the risk of ischemic stroke among smokers is twice than non-smokers and stroke has indeed accounted for one in every 17 Americans in the US, which makes for 1 stroke attack in every 40 seconds in the USA alone.
