Healthy Seafood As Superfood

Healthy seafood is now making good headway into the list of superfoods after it was discovered that they contain good amounts of essential nutrients and minerals for the body.

Healthy seafood for better health

The sea actually contains a good bounty of healthful foods that go beyond than just giving you lean white meat full of protein but also brings a plethora of benefits from a whole range of nutrients and minerals that are simply just amazing.

Healthy seafoods may even belong to the list of superfoods as several numerous studies have shown that the health benefits include good heart health, bone health and development, cancer-fighting properties and degenerative diseases, among the long list.

Bounty of the sea

Whether you are suffering from high blood pressure or just feeling tired, you might be surprised to find some seafood that could help you get over these conditions.

Food scientist and registered dietitian Juliette Kellow points out that there tremendous health benefits that you can get out of seafoods that you can simply get from your neighbourhoods fish-mongerer or wet market.

Kellow said that these are in fact good options if you feel the pinch of prices of supplements and other land-based food items, some may be a bit pricey but many other seafoods are even more affordable than meats or some vegetable varieties.

Crab

It may not be part of your regular diet, but the crab is one seafood that contains large amounts of protein and rich in essential nutrients that it wouldn’t be a surprise to tag it as an underwater superfood.

The crab’s brown meat is high in calcium that promotes good bone health, as well as iron that helps the body produce health red blood cells.

The white and brown meats of the crab has significantly high amounts of copper that helps boost the immune system, as well as zinc and selenium.

Shellfish and mussels

Mussels and shellfish are now making waves in supermarkets not as a novelty food, but as a healthy option as it has been found to have high selenium contents that is a potent antioxidant that help rid the body of free radicals.

Aside from a healthy dose of selenium, mussels and shellfish are also rich in phosphorus, copper, iodine, omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins B2 and B12.

Seabass

Another fish variety that has significant amounts of omega 3 fatty acids, the sea-bass is also rich in selenium and phosphorus, aside from a healthy dose of potassium.

Seabass is also a great source of vitamin B1, which helps strengthen the nervous system and good for the heart, compared to other fish varieties.

Sardines

A small, oily fish commonly found in almost all of the seas and oceans in the world, the sardines contains a lot of heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids.

It is also one of the very few dietary sources of Vitamin D that helps keep your teeth and bones healthy. 

Herring

One of the biggest leverages of herring is its reputation for being the beast source of vitamin D compared to all seafood items available.

A 140 gram serving of herring is more than twice the required daily requirement. It also contains a good dose of phosphorus and selenium.

Scampi

Also known as langoustines- are a close relative of the lobsters only small in size. These scampi varieties contain astaxanthin, a carotenoid that gives it its orange hue and is a potent antioxidant that helps fight free radicals.

It is also rich in vitamins B3 and B12.

Plaice

This is a white fish similar to flat fish and is high in Vitamin B complex, particularly biotin that also helps keep the skin and hair healthy.

Haddock

Aside from being rich in vitamins B3, B6 and B12, it also has a good dose of selenium, phosphorus and potassium.

It also has high iodine content that only a 140-gram serving is more than enough to provide the daily recommended allowance.

Coley

It is a white fish variety that has low calories and a significant amount of heart healthy omega 3 fatty acids. It is also an excellent source of protein that makes it a good source of protein for those who pursue a fat-burning diet.
