Time goes by quickly and is indeed a literal occurrence based on results of a recent study that it is in fact because of changes that occur in the body as people age and does indeed affect one’s perception of time.
Time goes by quickly with older people
Dr. Christian Yates, a mathematics professor and lecturer from the University of Bath, England, who suggests that there are theories and concepts that explain this phenomenon and that it does provide rational explanations.
Research shows that the perception of time moves faster among older people and often results in feeling rushed.
Metabolism slows down in aging
There are experts who believe that this is due to the gradual changes that occur in the human biological clocks. The slowing of the human metabolism also matches the heartbeat and breathing as people get older.
This relates to time perception when the body began to identify faster heartbeats and breathing rates for a particular period of time during the younger years, which the body perceives the same period of time but with less metabolism processes and body functions, making time appear faster and more hurried.
Faster the second time around
There is also this theory that says the older one gets, the more familiar become the surroundings.
It may be a mental thing, but once the brain processed images of new places and embeds the memory, it becomes a registered image that the brain need not process any longer.
Children and younger people may feel time is long because the brain still registers the ideas and processes it, while experienced adults have already been familiar with their surroundings and environment making it easy to recall in the mind.
Dopamine levels drop
The release of dopamine upon stimulation helps us learn to measure time. This theory suggests that after the age of 20, dopamine levels decrease and makes time appear to run faster.
Logarithmic scale
This theory supposes that the length of a fixed period as manage follows a logarithmic scale to time.
This may sound mathematical, but this theory does present some interesting ideas worthy of consideration.
Logarithmic scales are utilized instead of traditional linear scales that is used to measure sound and earthquakes.
As the quantities being measured usually vary to certain degrees, most often higher degrees of wide-measuring scales may be needed to make sense of what may be happening. This theory believes that it is the same with time.
Each increment on this logarithmic scale corresponds to a ten-fold increase in movement which is similar to how time can be measured, meaning the longer it takes, the faster it travels.
But no matter what theory may govern the speed of time, it would only teach man to always make the most out of it. The longer the time spent, the faster it gets, so make your time count.
