Scientists Discover A New Human Virus, Same With Hepa C

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

It is not only HIV and Hepa C that you can get through blood transfusion. Scientists recently discover a new human virus that can be transferred through transfusions of blood. What seemed to be an unknown and unnamed virus has been named human hepegivirus 1 (HHpgV-1). This virus has been found in a small number of people.

Further analysis and research lead to a new fact: HHpgV-1 comes from the same family as Hepatitis C Virus and flavivirus.

The virus, HHpgV-1, can not only be acquired through blood transfusion but patients could also manage to clear it.

Know more about this intriguing new virus in this article written by Justine Alford:

Scientists Discover A New Human Virus

During the 70s and 80s, thousands of people around the world were infected with HIV and hepatitis C after receiving transfusions of blood containing these viruses. Back then, screening wasn’t so stringent, nor was the assessment of who is eligible to donate. Now we have better techniques to identify such agents, we should be able to avoid catastrophes like these from happening, which is why a team of scientists has been on the hunt for new transfusion-transmissible agents that we might want to know about. Read more…

In the same article, Justine Alford writes that “although we know a lot of about the family of viruses to which belongs, we must be careful about drawing inferences when HHpgV-1 hasn’t even been isolated or grown in tissue culture yet, nor do we know how prevalent it is in the general population.”

As the world evolves in terms of technology, the more we know about what lies beneath our skin and the diseases we might get from careless, unsterile decisions we make.

New Artificial Pancreas Could Be A Life Changer For Type 1 Diabetics

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Children and young adults are the usual diagnosed patients of diabetes. 5% of the human population has Type 1 Diabetes. Now with technology and the endless efforts to solve health problems, scientists have developed new artificial pancreas which could be a life changer for type 1 diabetics.

Those who have type 1 diabetes do not produce insulin in their bodies. As explained, “the body breaks down the sugars and starches you eat into a simple sugar called glucose, which it uses for energy.”

With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, most especially the successful creation of artificial pancreas, life can get better.

Read on what else is there to know about this good news for type 1 diabetics, as written by Justine Alford:

New Artificial Pancreas Could Be A Life Changer For Type 1 Diabetics

Life isn’t easy for people with Type 1 diabetes. The inability to properly control blood sugar levels carries all sorts of risks, like seizures, heart attacks, nerve damage and ultimately an early grave. So it’s understandable scientists are investing a considerable amount of time, brain power and cash into making the condition more manageable. And they’re getting somewhere. Read more…

It is indeed true that new artificial pancreas could be a life changer type 1 diabetics. There were tests made to strengthen the study. Two groups of type 1 diabetics were recruited: adults and adolescents from 6 to 16. The groups compared continuous glucose monitors alone with the artificial pancreas for three months. In the adults, the system was trialled day and night, but in children it was only used overnight, when there is a dangerous unawareness of blood sugar levels.

“This was not actually the first human trial of the artificial pancreas, but it was the longest. Now that several have demonstrated its safety and improved glucose control, hopefully larger trials can be initiated to push it closer to market,” Justine writes in conclusion.

Scientists Proved that Lab-Grown Kidneys Work in Animals

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Apparently, thanks to technology and science, laboratory grown kidneys work in animals. Scientists have claimed that their studies and experiments to replace non-functioning kidneys with laboratory grown ones have promising results in animals.

This study have seeked help on the Japanese team and reports say that scientists have transplanted the laboratory grown kidneys into animals such as pigs and rats and it has worked properly sice — passing urine just like natural ones.

In this article written by Michelle Roberts, she shares the findings on this study and how it is still years away from being tested on humans:

Lab-grown kidneys work in animals

Scientists say they are a step closer to growing fully functioning replacement kidneys, after promising results in animals. Read more…

Manmade grown kidneys work well with animals, but it is still years away from being tested on humans. The need for kidney replacements has been a growing number. Statistics say that almost one person a day dies waiting for kidney replacement, that is almost 350 a year. In the UK, there are 6,000 people waiting in line for kidney replacement but due to the lack of kidney donations, only 3,000 are carried out each year.

Being years away from successful trials on humans is still many steps away from the start. Good news, indeed.
