Alzheimer’s Patients May Benefit From Compound In Red Wine

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills and eventually, the ability to carry out daily activities such as brushing teeth or bathing. In a latest statistics done by Alzheimer’s Disease International, nearly 44 million people worldwide have Alzheimer’s disease or dementia-related diseases. In the 10 leading cause of death in humans, Alzheimer’s disease is the only death cause that cannot be prevented, cured, or even slowed.

But a study was conducted recently showing that Alzheimer’s patients may benefit from compound in red wine. As observed, this compound can slow down the progress of patients affected with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s. Josh L Davis conveys this new scientific discovery:

Compound In Red Wine Might Help Alzheimer’s Patients

Supplements of a compound found in red wine appear to stabilize the blood levels of a protein associated with Alzheimer’s. Since this protein – amyloid beta 40 (Abeta40) – usually builds up in the brain as the disease develops, it’s assumed that levels consequently drop in the blood. But those with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s who were given the compound did not experience an anticipated decline in blood levels of Abeta40, according to a new study published in Neurology.

The research does not conclude that the compound, called resveratrol, can be used to treat Alzheimer’s, as the study author Scott Turner says in a statement: “This is a single, small study with findings that call for further research to interpret properly.” It confirms the compound’s safety at large doses when compared with a placebo, and allows the researchers to move on to a phase three trial with a much larger study group to confirm its effectiveness. Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive mental deterioration that commonly affects older people, causing premature senility. This disease was discovered by Dr. Alois Alzheimer in 1906, but until now, no cure has been found to counteract this degenerating disease. The compound, Resveratrol, generally found in red grapes, raspberries, and dark chocolate has vast potential in the advancement of Alzheimer’s disease development. Although the recent study is still under trial phase, this finding could lead us to the panacea we seek for this disease.
