Breakthrough: A New Human Organ Found

Last year was a series of ups and downs (mostly downs because of celebrities and children dying, wars, and terrorist attacks). However, the highlight of 2016 was the numerous breakthroughs in terms of research. We’ve uncovered a lot of the world’s secrets. It appears though that this new study has revealed something that we have yet to discover within ourselves.

In “The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology,” scientists declared that there’s a new organ inside us. Well, to be more specific, it’s hiding in our abdomen and it has just been classified. It was named as the mesentery, and it literally means “in the middle of the intestines.”

A Completely New Human Organ Has Just Been Officially Discovered

From gravitational waves to cooing dinosaurs, we’ve uncovered a lot about the world around us, but as a remarkable new study has revealed, there’s a lot within us we’ve yet to discover too. Read more…

Even Leonardo da Vinci gave descriptions about this organ before. However, it was thought to be a series of separate structures keeping the intestines connected to the abdominal wall. The research team from the University of Limerick used complex microscopy in order to confirm that the framework of this organ appear to be interconnected and part of one structure.

Patients undergoing operation to remove most or their entire colon were the subjects of the research. Since 2012, this was being taught to medical students as a new organ. It has been added to the Gray’s Anatomy textbook, and discussed in the new paper.

It’s Official: A Brand-New Human Organ Has Been Classified

Known as the mesentery, the new organ is found in our digestive systems, and was long thought to be made up of fragmented, separate structures. But recent research has shown that it’s actually one, continuous organ. Read more…

Calvin Coffey, the coordinating author of the study, mentioned that they’ve discovered an organ that wasn’t recognized in the past. They concluded that it has a supportive nature but experts don’t have any clue as to what it actually does. It’s proximity to the intestines might give them an idea but no definite functions have been stated.

Coffey said that they were able to identify the anatomy and the structure as of this time. The next part is to define the function. If the function is understood, you can monitor abnormal function and then examine the presence of disease.

Scientists Discover a New Organ

In the paper, which has been peer reviewed and assessed, we are now saying we have an organ in the body which hasn’t been acknowledged as such to date,” J. Calvin Coffey, a researcher from the University Hospital Limerick in Ireland, who first made the discovery, said in a release. Read more…

They found out that the blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatic tubes all carry a blood plasma-like fluid that has white blood cells. These go into the mesentary to the intestines. This suggests that it really has some sort of function. There is a need to investigate this further, and hopefully, they can find out what it does.
