Some speculations are rife with a powerful anti-aging secret unlocked in the tropical fruit pomegranate, as scientists claim they have found the anti-aging property that may be responsible for it.

Powerful anti-aging secret of the pomegranate

It’s been the subject of never-ending debates whether pomegranates are effective anti-aging superfood, but researchers from the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne and biotech company Amazentis claims findings a molecule responsible for this.

According to the research team, they discovered a molecule that transforms inside the gut when in the presence of microbes that enables muscle cells to protect one another from the damaging effects of aging.

In their study with nematodes and lab rats, the research team says that these came mostly from the pomegranates and human clinical testing will soon be underway according to the report published recently in the journal Nature Medicine.

“It’s the only known molecule that can relaunch the mitochondrial clean-up process, otherwise known as mitophagy,” says Patrick Aebischer, co-author on the study. “It’s a completely natural substance, and its effect is powerful and measurable.”

The science behind aging

The human body progressively struggles to protect human tissues and cells as people age. This powerhouse molecule called mitochondria, continues to degrade as time passes on and loses its power to generate new and healthy cells, as well as the muscles.

Many experts believe that this decline in the potency of the mitochondria in providing the body with healthy cells and suspects that it can even be responsible for age-related degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Source of the molecule

In fact the wonder molecule is not directly sourced from the pomegranate fruit, rather it is the chemical precursor that converts into urolithin A when it gets in contact with the microbes in the gut.

Urolithin A, however, may not create such an impact to their health, especially those who have gut problems or sensitivity, but the researchers are hopeful that their study could lead to future breakthroughs in the study to address aging.

“Precursors to urolithin A are found not only in pomegranates, but also in smaller amounts in many nuts and berries. Yet for it to be produced in our intestines, the bacteria must be able to break down what we’re eating. When, via digestion, a substance is produced that is of benefit to us, natural selection favours both the bacteria involved and their host. Our objective is to follow strict clinical validations, so that everyone can benefit from the result of these millions of years of evolution,” says Chris Rinsch, CEO of Amazentis and also the co author of the study.

They added that with this breakthrough discovery, they hope to see a ‘true shift in the sacietific paradigm’, which has never been explored.
