Studies into the uses of aspirin have taken another breakthrough into the vast potential of aspirin and just recently, scientists have found clues that see it having a role in the treatment and prevention of cancer.

This, after findings of a study published very recently in Cell Metabolism reveal the first comprehensive lipidomic profile of platelets in response to stimuli and aspirin

The research team headed by scientists from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom in collaboration with the University of Colorado and the University of Alabama Birminghan, were able to differentiate the profile of more than 5600 lipid tissues, simply known as fat, and how these fats react to aspirin.

The study’s lead author Dr. Valerie O’Donnell from the Division of Infection and Immunity, pointed out the possibility of aspirin playing a role in the treatment and prevention of cancer and by understanding the way people respond to aspirin will scientists be able to tell who and how they can benefit from it.

“The research shows a link between energy metabolism and inflammation, as well as providing early insight into the fundamentals of precision medicine regarding the variation of the lipidome among individuals,” said Dr. Victor Darley – Usmar, co-author of the study and Endowed Professor of Mitochondrial Medicine and Pathology at UAB.

Lipids, according to the researchers, play crucial structural roles by acting as nutrients and controlling a dynamic range of pathophysiological and physiological occurrences in cells.

The variations in the changes of lipid families is still undetermined by science, however, this study plays a promising hope to be able to understand the cellular changes and effects for it to be better understood and allow researchers to someday develop treatments or prevention for diseases like cancer and other degenerative conditions.

With the integration of aspirin into the picture both as an effective cardio protector and cancer-fighting potential, researchers may be able to understand how the platelets regulate lipid cells.

It will just be a matter of time before science would be able to determine the role that aspirin plays in the treatment of health conditions as well as the prevention of some debilitating diseases like cancer and other degenerative illnesses.
