You could be one of the millions of people all over the world with infected with eye mites that make you think less of it until you feel an irritation or inflammation in the areas surrounding your eyes.
They are known as Demodex Mites by their scientific name and are literally yet unsuspectingly known as eye mites that live along the base of the eyelids and eyelash areas, where they burrow into the hair follicles thriving in the natural oils in the body as they eat, crawl and mate.
These microscopic parasites are more prevalent among people who have pets that shun from sunlight and stay active during nighttime when they begin to mate and reproduce. These little critters begin to go active when people go to sleep and has a life cycle of two to three weeks where they eventually die and their offspring continues the life process.
These parasites usually do not cause problems, but may be able to do slight irritation or inflammation when they get too many and these parasites may be found anywhere – on floors, door mats, couches and curtains, particularly on areas frequented by house pets like cats and dogs.
Even hands that touched a surface that may be infested with these parasites can spread it instantly once those hands reaches up to the face and makes contact with the face.
Experts advise to always have clean hands and make sure that dirty hands do not touch the face or eyes to prevent the mites from getting into contact with the face, as well as making sure to always observe proper hygiene.
On the other hand, eye mite infestation can be treated with regular cleaning of the eyelids using tea tree oil wipes twice a day, but needs to be followed with a visit to the eye doctor for a thorough checkup and assessment.
A process may be applied where the skin debris from the eyelid may need to be exfoliated and to allow the oil glands near the eyelids to avoid drying up quickly to ensure good eyelid lubrication and protection.
Always make sure to have your eyes examined at least once or twice a year to ensure that you maintain good eye health and avoid having these parasites living in your eyelids.
