While others embrace it, some totally abhor it. But worry no more as science already found the grey hair gene responsible for causing it and are now into research on how to reverse its effects on a mane of black lustrous head of hair.
In a study by researchers from the University College London, they identified one of a possibly diverse gene linked to greying hair based on a study involving more than 6000 participants from five Latin-American nations.
The gene believed to be responsible for this is called IRF4- which is believed to be playing its role in the cellular process that produces the melanin pigment within the hair follicles. As the hair pigment starts to thin out from the follicles, it loses the ability to provide the dark pigmentation to the hair and results to greying.
The lead author of the study, Kaustubh Adhikari who is also a research associate in cell and developmental biology, said the test involved in intensive search into genomes and hair types of test participants who have been chosen primarily due to their diverse mix of ethnic backgrounds, like Native Americans for their straight and long hair, Europeans for their curly hair and fair skin complexion and African- Americans for their dark and thick or kinky hair.
In a survey conducted by the study team, the test subjects claimed they admit facing risks of developing grey hair at an early age, especially after observing the common phenomena with their older relatives, leading to the hypothesis that greying of the hair may be genetically linked.
Adhikari indicated that this is just the first step in determining the real and actual cause of greying hair, but pointed out that they discovered a major breakthrough in the study, adding that that they may soon break the code and probably get to recommend medication to help men and women relinquish the lustrous black shine to their hair.
Premature greying of hair have long baffled scientists, due to the complex nature of its occurrence in the human body, where some only get to experience having grey hair very late in life, while some get to have it at an early age.
Contrary to popular belief that stress may be a factor in the greying of hair, but there are no studies that have come out to support the myth. Surely, aging definitely is a cause of greying hair and no grey hair gene needs to show itself to prove it.
