http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

KHOU.com says that regularly popping a dose of Advil or Tylenol can take its toll on your hearing. There’s a new study that closely examined the effects of OTC drugs. This is more focused on the long-term usage.

Women who took certain medications for six years were 10% more likely to develop hearing loss. This was based on a report from the New York Times. The pain relievers were classified as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These were  ibruprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve).

What 6 Years Of Pain Relievers Might Mean For Your Ears

Those taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) for the same period were 9% more inclined to report hearing problems. The team did not find diminished hearing associated with aspirin use. Read more…

Fox News tells us about the connection between these medications and hearing loss. The researchers did not find any associations with diminished hearing and aspirin use.

The mechanism behind hearing loss remains unknown and the study was not able to provide the cause, however, it adds to the increasing body of evidence that auditory problems are somehow connected to these drugs.

Long-Term Use Of Pain Relievers Like Advil Has Been Linked To Auditory Loss In Women Over 60, Researchers Say.

Writing in the American Journal of Epidemiology, researchers compared long-term users with women who took the same pain meds two or more times per week for less than one year. Read more…

The researchers compared the long-term users with women who took the same pain medication for two or more times every week for less than a year.

It involved 54,000 women between the ages of 48-73. They self-reported their usage.

The lead author of the study is Brian M. Lin from Harvard. He tells the Times that while hearing loss was low, the use of these drugs is so rampant that it may have consequences for public health.

What 6 Years of Advil Might Mean for Your Ears

Lin says don’t halt the meds, but longtime users should “talk to their doctor just to see if they really need to be on them.” (Studies have linked Tylenol use to hyperactivity in children and a “lack of empathy. Read more…

It’s important to regulate the use of these drugs in order to prevent any serious effects. Talk to your doctor if you really have to take these everyday and check if you really need to be on them.

Older Adults: Weightlifting To Improve Brain Health

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Australian researchers that exercising even when you’re over 55s can have an important impact in your brain function. Those with Mild Cognitive Impairment can improve their brain functioning with weightlifting.

The research was carried out by a team from UNSW’s Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) and the universities of Sydney and Adelaide. The findings originated from the Study of Mental and Resistance Training (SMART).

Weightlifting Can Help The Over 55s Improve Brain Health As Well As Muscle Strength

MCI is a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease, with sufferers experiencing a noticeable reduction in cognitive abilities, including memory loss, although they are still able to live independently. Read more…

Sydney.Edu says that strength training is an important factor when it comes to improving your overall thinking capacities. It appears that there will be 135 million people who will eventually experience dementia by 2050.

With the results, it looks like we still have a chance. The study tackles the implications for the type and intensity of exercise that is highly recommended for the growing ageing population.

Strength Training Showed Benefits For People With Mild Cognitive Impairment

Findings from the Study of Mental and Resistance Training (SMART) trial show, for the first time, a positive causal link between muscle adaptations to progressive resistance training and the functioning of the brain among those over 55 with MCI. Read more…

Hindustantaimes.com says that the participants were divided into four groups. They were made to perform different exercises and trainings. Those in the resistance exercise group were instructed to perform weightlifting sessions twice a week for six months.

They were asked to execute the exercises to at least 80% of their peak strength. As they got stronger, the amount of weight they lifted on each machine was increased to let them maintain the intensity at 80%.

Want To Improve Brain Function After 55? Do Weights.

The findings showed that increasing muscle strength also improved cognitive function, the first time that a positive causal link has been found between muscle changes as a result of progressive resistance training and brain functioning in older people with MCI. Read more…

If people perform exercises frequently, the more likely we are to have a healthy ageing population. The main point is to maintain the frequency of this physical activity. Not only will it be good for your body but also maximizes your brain capacity.

Low Temperature Fitness: Is This A Better Environment For Exercise?

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

See, you may be wondering what the best environment for exercise is. Celebrities turn to sauna jackets to sweat more and burn more. However, a recent study shows results that keeping your body cold is even more effective.

How is it possible? It’s actually very basic. When you’re cold, your body has to work twice as hard to keep yourself warm. This involves burning more calories in the process.

Can Turning Down the Heat Help You Lose Weight?

Baby, it’s cold outside. For most of us, cooler temperatures mean reaching for cozy sweaters and cranking up the heat. But rethinking that last part can be wise for those looking to lose weight.” Read more…

Reader’s Digest says that a cozy and warm home may not be so ideal if you’re trying to lose fat. A new research in Obesity Reviews suggests that turning down the thermostat might be more helpful.

When we feel cold, we shiver and our bodies respond to the cold by contracting our muscles in order to produce warmth. The cold temperature also activates brown fat. This works like a furnace, torching the calories.

Lower Thermostat: Helps You Lose Weight?

When we don’t use our brown fat to warm us, we lose it, along with its calorie-burning potential, says study researcher Fiona Johnson, a research psychologist in the department of epidemiology and public Health at University College London. Read more…

Live Strong says that you can use your thermostat to your advantage. You can definitely utilize it as a tool in your weight-loss goals. When the temperature drops, the body goes through a series of changes.

Your metabolism increases and your body consumes the fat stores. There are previous findings that even discovered cold environments can potentially produce a better caloric burn.

How Many Calories Are Burned by Being Cold?

There are three stages to cold prevention the human body employs to stay warm, says Dr. Francesco Celi, chair of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. Read more…

How Can You Tell If You’ve Had Too Much Ibuprofen In One Day?

http://ifttt.com/images/no_image_card.png

Medical Daily says that there would be times the pain is just intolerable. It seems like popping a couple of tablets is still not enough to give you relief. If you’re someone who likes to take this OTC painkiller, take heed of this advice.

It appears that taking too much of this drug can eventually lead to serious outcomes. Our body can only take as much and there’s a sure limit to what we can tolerate.

Painkiller Overdose

Sometimes when our heads hurt, or any other body part for that matter, a couple of ibuprofens don’t seem like enough. Taking too much of the over-the-counter painkiller, however, could be dangerous. Read more…

AlterNet says that even the most popular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Motrin and Advil indicate warning labels that instruct individuals to limit their intake to only 1,200 milligrams per day.

That means that with 200-milligram pills, you can only take one every four hours. It is deemed as necessary for people to take a second pill if the first one doesn’t work.

Ibuprofen Overdose

While suggesting that people only take the minimum necessary to relieve their pain, they also say it is all right to take a second pill if one alone does not work. Taking two every six hours, a common strategy, would add up to a 1,600-milligram dose in one day. Read more…

US PressFrom says that these are the safest directions at the end of the scale. However, there are those that aren’t as well-defined. A website lists 3,200 as a safe dose for adults. Another article says that overdose symptoms are not likely to appear if someone has taken less than 100 milligrams per kilogram of their body weight.

There are different guidelines to follow and it’s not all the time that people can actually keep up with these facts,

How Much Should Be Considered as Enough?

Those directions are on the safest end of the scale. But the other end is not as well defined. Drugs.com lists a maximum daily dose of 3,200 milligrams a day for adults, for example. One article about ibuprofen overdoses on the National Institutes of Health discusses how symptoms will present themselves with overdoses, saying symptoms are unlikely if someone has taken less than 100 milligrams per kilogram of their body weight… Read more…

This is just a friendly reminder that too much of something can’t be a good thing at all. There’s a need to monitor intake in order to prevent long-term side effects.
