Australian researchers that exercising even when you’re over 55s can have an important impact in your brain function. Those with Mild Cognitive Impairment can improve their brain functioning with weightlifting.

The research was carried out by a team from UNSW’s Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA) and the universities of Sydney and Adelaide. The findings originated from the Study of Mental and Resistance Training (SMART).

Sydney.Edu says that strength training is an important factor when it comes to improving your overall thinking capacities. It appears that there will be 135 million people who will eventually experience dementia by 2050.

With the results, it looks like we still have a chance. The study tackles the implications for the type and intensity of exercise that is highly recommended for the growing ageing population.

Strength Training Showed Benefits For People With Mild Cognitive Impairment

Findings from the Study of Mental and Resistance Training (SMART) trial show, for the first time, a positive causal link between muscle adaptations to progressive resistance training and the functioning of the brain among those over 55 with MCI. Read more…

Hindustantaimes.com says that the participants were divided into four groups. They were made to perform different exercises and trainings. Those in the resistance exercise group were instructed to perform weightlifting sessions twice a week for six months.

They were asked to execute the exercises to at least 80% of their peak strength. As they got stronger, the amount of weight they lifted on each machine was increased to let them maintain the intensity at 80%.

The findings showed that increasing muscle strength also improved cognitive function, the first time that a positive causal link has been found between muscle changes as a result of progressive resistance training and brain functioning in older people with MCI. Read more…

If people perform exercises frequently, the more likely we are to have a healthy ageing population. The main point is to maintain the frequency of this physical activity. Not only will it be good for your body but also maximizes your brain capacity.
