He explains that every year though, during Christmas holidays and New Year’s, he returns to the operating room. The timing is perfect because of minimal leadership demands. More so because it simply means that he’s not likely to fly to another place.

It’s a pure and magical experience for him because he feels the contrast between his world as a CEO and as a surgeon. During this period, his focus shifts from the Kaiser Permanente members to a single patient at a time.

A surgery is something that’s just like choreography. It’s not something that’s simple. A surgeon must memorize the steps completely, master anatomy flawlessly, and evaluate the disease process accurately.

The most important part of the entire procedure would be teamwork. There is a certain flow that happens when people work together. When the group works well, the movements are synchronized and effortless.

Surgery involves a complex choreography, and in preparation, the surgeon must memorize the anatomy, the disease process and the exact steps that will be followed.
