A report from Medical News Today says that the study’s findings suggest ibuprofen’s benefits have the potential to lower the risk of death. This includes former and current smokers. The disease is one of the most common types of cancers in the United States and it is responsible for 14 percent of new CA cases.
Dr. Marisa Bittoni, the study co-author, presented the results of the study along with colleagues at the IASLC 17th World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in Vienna, Austria.
Ibuprofen Could Reduce Smokers’ Risk Of Death
This year, it is estimated that around 224,390 people in the U.S. will be diagnosed with lung cancer, and more than 158,000 Americans will die from the disease, making it the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Read more…
Ibuprofen is commonly taken by those who experience pain and inflammation. Regular use appears to lower the disease risk. Chronic inflammation increases the cancer risk and medicines that fight this symptom lower that possibility.
However, very little studies have investigated the connection between the disease and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). That’s why Dr. Bittoni and her colleagues initiated the study and analyzed the data from 10,735 participants in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, or NHANES III.
Regular Use of Ibuprofen May Lower Risk Among High-Risk Subgroups of Cigarette Smokers
Baseline data on smoking, NSAIDs and other lifestyle variables were collected for 10,735 participants starting in 1988-1994, and cause-specific mortality status was ascertained through probabilistic record matching using the National Death Index through 2006. Read more…
Daily Mail says that this is one of the first studies that focused on the connection between smokers, lung cancer, and NSAIDS. When taken in small doses at regular intervals, it lowers the inflammation that results to tumour in the lungs.
The study also looked into the mortality rate using the National Death Index through 2006. Ibuprofen intake resulted into a 48 percent reduction in the risk of dying from the cancerous disease.
Regular Doses Of Ibuprofen ‘Lowers Smokers’ Risk Of Lung Cancer By 48%’
Since all but 17 of the 269 fatal lung cancer cases occurred among current or former smokers, estimates of NSAID effects were ascertained from a sub-cohort of 5,882 individuals who reported a history of past or current cigarette smoking. Read more…
The findings of Dr. Bittoni’s group present a great possibility of developing treatment for patients. For future studies, they may be able to create a drug that can ultimately lower the risk of disease progression.
