CNN reports about the signs and symptoms of these patients. First, let’s talk about Ashley Rivas. She was 26 years old when she felt tired during her runs. For the next few years, she had a persistent cough and wheezing. In addition to that, she exhibited weight loss, fever and pneumonia.

When she finally had a chest x-ray, it revealed that she had a mass on her right lung. It was a malignant tumor. The thing is, she’s never smoked a cigarette in her entire life.

Fox News says that there are other known risk-factors aside from a family history of smoking. It includes exposure to numerous pollutants like asbestos, arsenic, radon, and diesel fumes, as explained by Dr. McKee.

This type of cancer is the most common, globally. Every year, women’s mortality rate increases more than breast, ovarian, and uterine cancer combined. Dr. McKee says what’s good about this is that it is highly curable if diagnosed early. It’s pure luck that this was the case for Rivas.

But only about 16% of cases are caught at stage 1. “Usually it’s like a 7- to 8-millimeter nodule sitting in the middle of a lung that doesn’t have any symptoms associated with it,” says Dr. McKee. Read more…

Health.com says that this disease is the number one cancer killer of women. What’s really a bit surprising is that these survivors with no smoking history got struck with the condition. They share the signs that they experienced even before the diagnosis.

Andrea McKee, MD, the chair of radiation oncology at Lahey Hospital Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts, says that about 15% of patients did not use tobacco and they may be young.
