Magnesium is in fact a key mineral that the body needs and without it,you would feel more bloated, constantly fatigued and sluggish. Magnesium is essential as it is responsible for activating hundreds of enzyme systems in the body to allow normal body functions from metabolism, bone building and muscle and nerve functioning.

It is believed to be a good supplement in the prevention of diabetes, since magnesium helps improve insulin sensitivity and production in the body to maintain stable blood glucose levels as well as energy levels when working out.

Researchers from Indiana University recently found out that magnesium can also help reduce the risks of metabolic syndrome – a condition that results from high blood pressure, excess body fat, high cholesterol levels and high blood glucose levels, by as much as 30 percent.

Additional benefits from magnesium is that it can also prevent migraine headaches and promotes better sleep during nighttime.

For fitness buffs and muscle builders, magnesium can help improve lifting power as it enhances muscular contractions and helps prevent water retention.

Magnesium is can be easily sourced from a lot of food products, which makes it easy to include this mineral in your regular diet.

Among the common sources are oatmeal, swiss chard, hemp hearts, yoghurt, almonds, mung beans, wheat germ and peanuts.

Magnesium is required by the body for oxidative phosphorylation, energy production and glycolysis, as well as contributes mainly in bone development and DNA synthesis.

The average adult body contains at least 25 grams of magnesium of which 50% is found in the bones and the rest distributed throughout the soft tissues of the body.

Sadly, magnesium deficiency is one of the leading health problems in the today, with almost 75% of American adults consuming less than the recommended daily allowance for optimal health and only 19% of adults or every 1 in 5 consume less than half of the required daily values for magnesium.

This could also be attributed to the lack of proper integration of magnesium in meals, as the average American diet consists barely half of the required magnesium levels as it should to maintain proper nutrition for the body.
