Foods to avoid at the supermarket are in fact among those most common food items and are in fact among the best selling products there are, regardless of the lack of nutritional value they provide to consumers.

Foods to avoid at the supermarket: junk foods

Good food may not always be found on store shelves, if you have to be honest about it and there are those that would be responsible for making you succumb to an unhealthy lifestyle.

These are commonly known as discretionary foods and have been found to be among the unhealthiest lot that are high in salt, saturated fat, added sugars and a lot of calories in them.

These ingredients are rife for causing a slew of health conditions including obesity, weight gain, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. Studies have shown that even the most intense exercise or fitness programs could not expend or burn off the calories and fat that these food items contain when consumed regularly and in large portions.

Sweet treats

These are among the most enticing items that you find in stores, visually and tastefully attractive to children and they could not get enough of it. And there’s the rub, consuming too much sweets causes dental caries leading to tooth decay mostly among children.

Candy bars, lollipops, toffee, gummy bears, you name it. These items contain large amounts of sugar. Just 100 grams of gummy bears contains over 1400 kilojoules and over 50 grams of sugar equivalent to 10 teaspoons.

Soda beverages and energy drinks

No wonder people love them, just like candy, these drinks contain large amounts of sugar in them.

A 15-year of some 15000 adults reveals that those who drank no less than one cup of softdrink daily increased the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by almost 30%.

Another study also found that a can of soft drink daily highly contributes to more than six kilograms of weight gained in a year’s time for those who do not follow a regular exercise program.

Chips and crisps

Once you pop, you can’t stop. So goes the popular line for a famous snack food. But in reality, this goes out to every snack food available in the market, no matter what it’s made off.

People spend billions of dollars on potato chips, corn chips or any other packaged snack food that does not have any nutritional value at all.

Worse, these foods contain large amount of salt or added sugar that may be harmful for the body.

Try snacking on popcorn as an alternative to these salted snack foods. Air-popped popcorn contains only 150 kilojoules against those of potato chips that average no less than 550 kilojoules.

Processed meats

Studies show that processed meats, when eaten regularly over time, may cause intestinal problems, including cancer. Most processed meats like smoked ham, bacon, sausages, luncheon meat and pastrami, just to name a few, often contain additives like nitrates and nitrites that have been found to contribute in developing cancer.
