Undo the negative impact of sitting by exercising

The American Heart Association recently published s study involving the effects of a sedentary lifestyle and how it may affect the health of a person, even just by simply sitting at the office the whole day.

The lack of physical ability for hours on end affects the way we define health and has been proven through numerous studies that a sedentary lifestyle can affect brain activity and muscle movement.

However, unless you are an extreme or avid athlete or fitness person, the ill effects of a sedentary life could not be offset by any know exercise.

Start right away

Health experts, however, believe that one should get started right away by incorporating some exercises moves or routines that can be done at the office, in order for the body to get some activity going, rather than just sitting all day.

A highly recommended activity level for desktop workers is to stand up and move around every hour and at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise like brisk walking around your neighbourhood or the park, as a minimum goal.

Worsening sedentary lifestyle pattern

Studies show that average Americans spend 6 to 8 hours a day in sedentary time and older citizens spend no less than 8.5 to 9.6 hours a day according to Young.

A sedentary lifestyle also increase the risk of having diabetes, as it largely impacts the why the body uses insulin in the conversion of food to glucose that the body uses for fuel.

Without the optimal process in place, it leads to an abnormal increase of insulin levels, resulting to acquired diabetes.

The Center for Disease Control recommends for educational programs, including awareness and education to push for more physical activity among all age groups to counter the ill effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

Among the recommendations were for communities to establish a partnership with their local officials to develop more activity-focused areas like bicycle lanes, stairwells, walking paths, free to use exercise facilities, swimming pools and jogging paths, among others, to promote more exercise activities among constituents.

At work, you may try to do take the last few flights of stairs instead of the elevator, stand up and walk around every hour, do push-ups, squats or dips, take a walk for lunch or even printing documents in a printer located the farthest from you to encourage you to stand up and walk.
