Why you should never retire is found to be a factor in the longevity and good health of several people who have lived long enough to prove that it works.

Why you should never retire for health reasons

Swiss native Charles Eugster wakes up in the morning, takes breakfast, hikes uphill for 10 minutes to take his daily commute of a 30-minute train ride and another 10-minute tram ride to the office.

As he arrives for work, he goes to his desk to heck his emails, update his website, writes and continues his research into aging and good health. You could say that this is the usual workday for an average person, except that Eugster is already 97 years old.

Staying active

“I’m not chasing youthfulness. I’m chasing health. People have been brainwashed to think that after you’re 65, you’re finished. But retirement is a financial disaster and a health catastrophe,” he says.

Euster worked as a dentist until he was 75 and said that he could not imagine himself not working and did not entertain the thought of retiring until now.  Aside from his regular workdays, he trains three times a week and is the world record holder for the 200 meter and 400 meter sprint records for men over 95 years old.

Alarmingly aging population

The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reports that The reduction of old-age poverty has been one of the greatest social policy successes in OECD countries,”

“As the baby boomer generation retires and pension systems continue to be reformed, the focus on preventing old-age poverty will become sharper and sources of income in old age other than those from pension systems would have to be considered,” the OECD adds.

Like Eugster, aside from the fact that he developed the same analysis for the status of retirement, he considers it both as a way to keep himself active and as a means to keep his body and mind sharp.

Older people are more likely to have health problems

What seems to compound these notions is the fact that old age of often equated with diseases and ailments, including other behavioural factors that may even cause the older people to move less frequently or do regular exercises to stay healthy.

Eugster hopes he can still held educate the world about health and fitness awareness even in old age to ensure that older people continue to live good quality lives and have a positive overall well-being
