New Findings From Study Say You Should Only Drink Water When Thirsty

We can all agree that water is the source of life. We absolutely cannot live without it. Our body craves it and we need it to survive.

Before, experts recommend at least 8 glasses of water every day. A lot of people in the medical field would say that it’s good for your body. However, this claim has no scientific explanation.

On another note, there might be people who find it challenging to consume eight glasses a day. Well, a new study may be able to enlighten us why this happens.

Medicalnewstoday.com reports that researchers found out about the swallowing mechanism in the body that is responsible for rejecting excess water. The mechanism stops the human body from taking in too much liquid when we are not feeling thirsty.

Water presents its importance as the human body is primarily composed of it. It accounts for about 60% of the body weight. The old rule of eight glasses a day was the perfect target for individuals. However, the new study suggests differently. We should only drink when we are thirsty:

As for smh.com.au, author Sarah Berry says that the body has its own natural mechanisms that strive to maintain the balance relating to hydration. The new study from Monash University proves that this response prevents us from overhydrating.

The response involves inhibiting our ability to swallow the liquid; this overrides the 8 glasses a day rule, and maintains the body’s balance.

Study Associate Professor Michael Farrell says, “There have been cases when athletes in marathons were told to load up with water and died, in certain circumstances, because they slavishly followed these recommendations and drank far in excess of need.”  This means that we should just simply listen to our body and consider its reaction.

Water, after all, is essential for carrying oxygen and nutrients to the cells and flushing wastes from our bodies. Water, which makes up more than half our body and 70 per cent of our brain, also cushions our joints.

Fiona Macdonald from sciencealert.com states that there are limitations to consider. The study was conducted only within a small sample size, the mechanism was self-reported, and sodium levels were not checked to confirm it was really being caused by over drinking. 

Despite of these limitations, the study shows us how our bodies work. It’s kind of fascinating to know that it reacts to our fluid intake and somehow it regains control. The results of the study help us choose better when it comes to drinking water.

The study definitely has its limitations – it was a small sample size, and not only was the swallowing inhibition mechanism self-reported, it also wasn’t correlated with sodium levels in the bloodstream to confirm that it was being triggered by over-drinking. Read more…
