Canada approves prescription heroin with the support of several medical authorities and experts as part of harm reduction strategies and reduce the risks of intravenous drug use.

Doctors are positive that with the support of the health ministry of Canada, as it will be coursed through the Special Access Programme for doctors to have access to the drugs due to the lack of availability in the country.
This is mainly because they want to control and monitor the release of the drug as there has been a noted increase in drug use like heroin to support medications for chronic relapsing opioid dependence.
“Health Canada recognizes the importance of providing physicians with the power to make evidence-based treatment proposals in these exceptional cases. Scientific evidence supports the medical use of diacetylmorphine for the treatment of chronic relapsing opioid dependence in certain individual cases,” Canadian health officials said in a statement
Deaths due to opioid dependence
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 28,000 deaths that were officially recorded for the United States, while in Canada, opioid –related deaths rose sharply and made up for half of all drug-related deaths.
Authorities are hopeful that this may address the drug-related issues in the US and Canada, while they are also looking into increasing awareness campaigns regarding drug abuse and prevention.
Opioid dependence is believed to be a chronic relapsing disease that was found difficult to cure.
Rising drug use
The National Institute on Drug Abuse, reported that there is an increasing trend in the use of illicit drugs in the United States. About 24.6 million aged 12 and above have reported using an illicit drug only in the recent month when the official survey was conducted.
The most commonly used drug is marijuana.
While cocaine use has been found to decrease, it gave rise to the increase in the use of a group of drugs known as methamphetamine.
The popularity of methamphetamine, which is also the drug of choice in Asia, is more cheaper to produce.
Among the common effects of drug abuse are schizophrenia, dementia, paranoia, lack of appetite for food and severe cases of massive overdose can lead to death.
There are also drug-related deaths caused by the sale of illegal drugs and criminal activities arising from the use of illicit drugs.
