The brain itself combats the aging as it processes mental capacities like when focus becomes a strength for older people and younger people are able to divide their attention to gather more information.
How the brain compensates in function when aging.
To a certain extent, the brain is able to slow down negative effects of aging by increasing its level of attentiveness,’ says lead author Sabrina Schenk, of Germany’s Ruhr-Universität Bochum.
The process is what slows the brain from aging and how it can help the body compensate in function as well, according to Schenk.
In another development, scientists discovered a possible ‘fountain of youth’ with the pomegranate fruit, which researchers found to contain a highly-potent molecule that slows down aging
The science behind aging
The human body progressively struggles to protect human tissues and cells as people age. This powerhouse molecule called mitochondria, continues to degrade as time passes on and loses its power to generate new and healthy cells, as well as the muscles.
Many experts believe that this decline in the potency of the mitochondria in providing the body with healthy cells and suspects that it can even be responsible for age-related degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease.
Source of the molecule
In fact the wonder molecule is not directly sourced from the pomegranate fruit, rather it is the chemical precursor that converts into urolithin A when it gets in contact with the microbes in the gut.
Urolithin A, however, may not create such an impact to their health, especially those who have gut problems or sensitivity, but the researchers are hopeful that their study could lead to future breakthroughs in the study to address aging.
“Precursors to urolithin A are found not only in pomegranates, but also in smaller
amounts in many nuts and berries. Yet for it to be produced in our intestines, the bacteria must be able to break down what we’re eating. When, via digestion, a substance is produced that is of benefit to us, natural selection favors both the bacteria involved and their host. Our objective is to follow strict clinical validations, so that everyone can benefit from the result of these millions of years of evolution,” says Chris Rinsch, CEO of Amazentis and also the co author of the study. Amazentis is a biotech company involved in research and development of medicines.
They added that with this breakthrough discovery, they hope to see a ‘true shift in the scientific paradigm’, which has never been explored by traditional pharma.
