UPI.com reports one interesting fact about this: the artificial blood is in a powdered form, and it can potentially make changes in emergency medicine. Well, this new approach increases the chances of survival for trauma victims.

The scientists were able to recreate red blood cells that pick up oxygen in the lungs and distribute it to tissues in the entire body. The process of using this innovation is quite interesting. Check it out below:

This can be freeze-dried, making it easier for combat medics and paramedics to keep on hand for emergencies, said senior researcher Dr. Allan Doctor. He is a critical care specialist at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Read more…

The Street says that scientists took a long while to do the process. For decades, they’ve attempted to create the molecule that exhibits the function of human red blood cells. However, these attempts were unsuccessful. It failed because of oxygen delivery and safety issues. After these events, funds became an issue because there was little money to invest in this field. Then, it was abandoned.

Now, a group of scientists spearheaded by Dr. Allan Doctor, a physician and transfusion medicine specialist at Washington University in Saint Louis, are trying to develop the technology involved in the field.

Human Blood Substitutes, Once Dead, Now Resuscitated

These efforts failed due to oxygen delivery and safety problems. After the blowups, there was little money to invest in new blood substitutes. The field was largely abandoned. Read more…

Medscape says that it may take 10 years for it to be fully developed and turned into reality. The buzz is still about the use of artificial blood that can be administered to trauma patients.

The process: paramedic mixes the bad of red powder with sterile water to produce the artificial blood. Then, it can be given to any patient, regardless of the blood type.

It could make a difference between life and death.

It is estimated that 25% of in-field deaths of US military personnel are preventable, and hemorrhagic shock is the cause of death in 90% of these cases, where individuals die not from damage to major organs but because they basically bleed to death before they can be brought to a hospital, commented Allan Doctor, MD… Read more…

This presents a great potential especially in saving the lives of thousands of people who may die because of blood loss. If it will be turned into reality, it can shape the future of medical technology.
