CTV News reports about the findings of the study and they discovered that there’s a connection with the amount of sleep and car accidents.

According to the results from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study, if a person gets less than seven hours sleep in a day, it nearly doubles the risk.

Sleeping For Only 6 Hours Can Double Car Crash Risk

Researchers say that while an overwhelming majority of drivers they interviewed said they viewed “drowsy driving” as dangerous behaviour, one in three admitted they drove while having a hard time keeping their eyes open at least once in the past month. Read more…

CBS News says that this is a negative effect of sleep deprivation. Drivers who get one or two hours less than the recommended amount are greatly at risk.

Those who miss 2-3 hours in a 24-hour period quadrupled their risk. It’s the same crash risk as drunk driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Missing Sleep Doubles Car Crash Risk

The report is based on the analysis of a representative sample from the NHTSA’s National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey of 7,234 drivers involved in 4,571 crashes. Each crash involved at least one vehicle that was towed from the scene and resulted in emergency medical services being dispatched to the scene. Read more…

WebMD says that this is the first ever study that quantified the relationship between lack of sleep and car crash. The study’s author, Brian Tefft, adds that sleep-impaired driving has not been given the utmost attention.

Bryan Thomas, the federal agency’s communications director, said that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) considers this as a problem. They’ll soon come up with a national plan to correct this issue.

Missing Sleep May Double Car Crash Risk

And getting behind the wheel after only four to five hours of shut-eye quadruples that risk. That’s comparable to driving with a blood alcohol concentration considered legally drunk, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety researchers warned.Read more…

Before you go behind the wheel, it’s good practice to at least make sure that you’re not sleep deprived. It’s important to consider your safety above anything else.
