NPR.Org says that there’s a science behind the asparagus pee. Louis Lémery, an 18th century French botanist, said that there seems to be a “filthy and disagreeable smell in the urine.” There are some though who are not aware of this distinct smell.

According to a new research, there are genetic differences between the two groups. The difference between people who can distinguish the smell and those who can’t may have something to do with their genetic makeup.

We Unravel The Science Mysteries Of Asparagus Pee

The 18th century French botanist Louis Lémery wrote that asparagus causes “a filthy and disagreeable smell in the urine, as everybody knows.” Not everybody, Louis. Not everybody. Read more…

The Telegraph UK says that scientists sniffed out the answer to the mystery. Three out of five people can’t detect the odor. The research had to gather data from 6,909 participants. It is composed of 58 percent men and 61.5 percent women who claim that they are unable to notice the odor. In other words, they had asparagus anosmia.

The researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health said that they found 871 genetic coding variants or SNPs, on genes associated with smell. This implies that being incapable of smelling the odor is inherited.

Scientists Sniff Out Answer To ‘Asparagus Pee’ Mystery

French novelist Marcel Proust once fancifully described the smell as “transforming my humble chamberpot into a bowl of aromatic perfume” but it seems he was in the minority as three in five people are unable to even detect it, according to a study published on Wednesday. Read more…

PopSci says that at around 40 percent can detect the odor. They also added that women aren’t as likely to report the smell. The reason is that there are a few modest women who are underreporting. They may not like to admit that they can smell the distinctive odor.

Another thing is that it’s also possible that women are not likely to notice it because of the way they are positioned during urination. It lowers their exposure to the odor.

New Study: Why Can Some People Detect Asparagus In Their Pee?

We may never know what trick of evolution led some of us to smell the effects of asparagus on our urine while some are left blissfully ignorant. But thank goodness someone is asking. Read more…

The importance of the results of this study indicates that genes may play a role in the use of our senses. Gene editing techniques may be applied as a form of targeted therapy in other fields.
