Possible Hearing Loss Due To Pain Relievers

KHOU.com says that regularly popping a dose of Advil or Tylenol can take its toll on your hearing. There’s a new study that closely examined the effects of OTC drugs. This is more focused on the long-term usage.

Women who took certain medications for six years were 10% more likely to develop hearing loss. This was based on a report from the New York Times. The pain relievers were classified as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These were  ibruprofen (Advil) or naproxen (Aleve).

Those taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) for the same period were 9% more inclined to report hearing problems. The team did not find diminished hearing associated with aspirin use. Read more…

Fox News tells us about the connection between these medications and hearing loss. The researchers did not find any associations with diminished hearing and aspirin use.

The mechanism behind hearing loss remains unknown and the study was not able to provide the cause, however, it adds to the increasing body of evidence that auditory problems are somehow connected to these drugs.

The researchers compared the long-term users with women who took the same pain medication for two or more times every week for less than a year.

It involved 54,000 women between the ages of 48-73. They self-reported their usage. 

The lead author of the study is Brian M. Lin from Harvard. He tells the Times that while hearing loss was low, the use of these drugs is so rampant that it may have consequences for public health.

It’s important to regulate the use of these drugs in order to prevent any serious effects. Talk to your doctor if you really have to take these everyday and check if you really need to be on them.
