A person is diagnosed with blood cancer every 3 minutes, while a person dies of it every 9 minutes. These statistics are in the United States alone, what more in the whole world?
Hundreds of thousands of people worldwide are diagnosed with blood cancer. It can be caused by infections, exposure to certain chemicals, compromised immune system, blood disorder, especially if you have a family history of cancers. It can start as early as childhood, and it’s almost impossible to fight off.
There are technological advances introduced over the past years, and there’s another one recently that can probably help treat blood cancer. Read all about the Australian stem cell breakthrough in this report by Kemal Atlay on News:
Australian stem cell breakthrough provides fresh hope for treating blood cancers
Researchers from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute were able to successfully create blood stem cells in the lab almost identical to those that grow inside a developing embryo. Read more…

The slow climb from innovation to cure: treating anaemia with gene editing
The ability to precisely edit DNA via CRISPR technology has emerged as the one of the most powerful advances in biology. A new paper showing repair of a genetic mutation in human blood cells represents an important step towards treating the common, debilitating and expensive-to-treat blood disease known as sickle cell anaemia. Shortly after the Australian stem cell breakthrough article was published, researchers have found a few criticisms about the said discovery. Read more about it on The Conversation:
The hard sell of stem cells: we need a better way to protect patients from harm
As ABC’s 7.30 revealed last night, Australia has a flourishing stem cell treatment market. During these procedures, cells are taken from a patient and re-administered to them. Read more…
This Australian stem cell breakthrough is not the only study on how stem cells can help with cancers. But so far, these kinds of studies remain as researches that may or may not be effective in the future.
Of course, there will always be criticisms but it’s never wrong to continuously seek for answers and solutions, especially when it comes to cancer. We are lucky to have scientists that actively try new things just to find out a single cure. The loophole here, probably, is when medical professionals give out false hopes to patients, in exchange for money.
Right now, all we can do is hope for a cure for this deadly disease.
