Right to Try Group Seeking Approval for Experimental Treatments

A group is proposing the right for terminally ill patients to subject themselves to experimental treatments. This means that when granted the permission for these people, they can take drugs that are still under the investigative phase before the approval from Health Canada.

These patients are all entitled to a doctor-assisted death. Since that’s the case, they should all be granted permission to seek treatment using experimental drugs.

Patients Demand ‘Right To Try’ Experimental Treatment

So far, nearly 100 patients with terminal conditions from across Canada, or their family members, have joined the group. The proposed law would apply to individuals with ALS, Parkinson’s disease, certain forms of cancer and other terminal illnesses. Edmonton Journal reports that last November 2, Members of the Parliament got emails. People who are terminally ill are asking the authorities about being able to access drugs that can potentially save their lives.

The MP were asked to sign the ‘Certificate of Acknowledgement and Support’. The main objective is to bring it to the attention of Honorable Jane Philpott, the Health Minister.

Joanne Laucius from Ottawa Citizen tells us that a group of patients are encouraging the MPs to give them the approval to test out the developmental drugs. The group consists of 28 members; all diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or terminal cancer.

The person who has an incurable illness should be given the right to choose the kind of treatment that does not require approval. The purpose is to obtain chances of prolonging life and be able to live it.

With these in mind, the outcome is still undetermined. For the critically ill patients, let’s hope that they get the best results. After all, the bottom line is prolonging their life and increasing their chances of survival.
