Distasteful Humour May Be Linked to Dementia

According to the World Health Organization, 47.5 million people worldwide are suffering from dementia. This is even expected to more than triple by the year 2050.

Most of us are familiar of its common symptoms like problems with memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language, and judgement. But a recent finding says that one’s distasteful humour may be linked to dementia, too. Read more in this report by Michelle Roberts on BBC:

Change in sense of humour ‘a sign of impending dementia’

The University College London study involved patients with frontotemporal dementia, with the results appearing in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Questionnaires from the friends and family of the 48 patients revealed many had noticed a change in humour years before the dementia had been diagnosed. Read more…

It is not a normal part of aging, so some symptoms may be unrecognized. Just like this one wherein a distasteful humour may be linked to dementia. Just like what was mentioned in the article, this new discovery will help early and accurate diagnosis, which in turn will improve the quality of life of people suffering from it, as well as their families.
