Being very rich in protein and vitamin D, fish is a major part of the human diet. In fact, fish consumption has been rapidly growing at a rate of 3.6 percent every year since the 1960s.

Humans rely on it for the heart-healthy fats called omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s are also known to boost brain health, ease depression, and reduces risk of eye disease, type 1 diabetes, and certain types of cancers. Fatty fishes such as salmon and sardines are among the best sources. But it seems like that’s coming to an end.

What you can do is to avoid certain fish such as king mackerel, shark, bluefish, and swordfish as they are often high in mercury, which can damage the nervous system. Other harmful contaminants include dioxins and PCBs. Older adults, pregnant women and children are particularly at risk.
