New MS Treatment Uses Stem Cells to Reverse Debilitating Effects

As the most widespread neurological condition in the world, multiple sclerosis has disrupted many a lives – and scientists are still puzzled as to how the disease starts or progresses. With all the disheartening statistics that revolves around the condition, too, some good news is certainly due. And, fortunately, it arrives in the form of a new MS treatment.

Multiple sclerosis can develop at any age, but people usually get diagnosed between their 20s and 40s. Symptoms vary from person to person, but the most common include vision problems, fatigue, muscle weakness, and problems with balance and coordination. There are four types: relapsing-remitting MS, primary-progressive MS, secondary-progressive MS, and progressive-relapsing MS.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society says that about 10 percent of MS patients have a benign type of the condition, but about 1 percent of them develop MS that progresses very rapidly.

Things are looking up, however, with the new MS treatment.

The promising new MS treatment will surely mean a lot to everyone who is afflicted with multiple sclerosis all over the world. MS is reported to be second only to congenital heart failure where treatment costs are concerned. In the United States alone, treating the condition runs anywhere from around $9, 000 to $55, 000.

In the meantime, if you, a friend, or a family member is suffering from the condition, continue any treatment that has been prescribed by a doctor. If there is a therapy program that a patient is following, make sure that it is suited to the patient’s specific needs. Physical therapy, for instance, should be geared at improving leg weakness and other issues with gait, among others.

Risks should also be managed well. Pregnant women, for example, do not typically have problems with carrying their babies through the term – but care and caution should still be practiced, at all times.
