A recent report from Yvette Yang for BBC.com shows that the poison of one of the world’s deadliest snakes has the potential to relieve pain.

Scientists have observed the long-glanded blue coral snake, its properties and behavior. Pain relief is linked to this snake, according to the researchers from the University of Queensland. The research which was published in the journal, Toxin, found that its main goal is to target receptors which are essential in pain management in humans. This has the possibility of being used as a form of treatment.

Dr Bryan Fry, a researcher from the University of Queensland, says that most species have slow-acting venom that acts like a powerful sedative: you get sleepy before you die. It’s poison works in an instant due to the nature of its prey.

Jenn Gidman from Newser.com explains that for pain control and management, we immediately turn to ibuprofen. What if there’s a choice for potent venom in managing pain? Scientists claim that the venom takes the prey’s nerves into a massive shock, giving the body a devastating blow.

Another discovery from this beautiful creature is that it has the capability of affecting the nerve sodium channels – this is important as it can pave way in managing pain in humans.

Beautiful ‘Freak’ Snake May Ease Your Pain One Day

Ibuprofen for your splitting headache, or venom from the “killer of killers”? Scientists say that poison from one of the rarest, most “beautiful” snakes in the world—a creature that devours king cobras for breakfast and boasts “freaky” poisonous glands that run a quarter of its body length—could potentially provide effective pain relief for humans down the road. Read more…

Skynews.com.au reports that the initial decision of the researchers to study the snake was purely because of general curiosity. Little did they expect it could lead to a possible breakthrough concerning pain management?

There is a big difference in the blue coral snake’s poison compared with other snakes. This is because the snake is a veteran in hunting other venomous snakes. Therefore, the venom should be fast-acting like how a scorpion kills its prey.

Snake Venom Could Be Key To Pain Relief

Prof Fry said the decision to study the snake was general curiosity, but the qualities of the venom they’ve uncovered could lead to major breakthroughs in medication. Read more…

The components were found to be potent enough that these can be subjected to future research. It is still quite new and under investigation but if there would be progress, it’s most likely to produce great innovations for treatment.
