New York Times reporter Nicholas Bakalar gives us a glimpse about the study. Let’s take a closer look.

The numbers are in: it’s showing us something that’s a bit more concerning. The new research received results that show 28.6 percent of cancer related deaths in the United States is related to cigarette smoking.

The scientists came up with the number through the use of relative risks for 12 smoking-related cancers. Acute myeloid leukemia, mouth cancers, and those of the esophagus, stomach and colon are part of the list.

A New Death Toll for Smoking

Citing a previous study, the authors wrote that tobacco control efforts have been credited with preventing about eight million premature deaths. Yet tobacco control in many parts of the country is quite weak. Read more…

Sci Tech Today reports that this habit accounts for 1 out of 4 cancer deaths in America. It appears that the level is highest in men in the southern states. This may be due to the fact that it’s more common and tobacco regulations are less strict.

If there are fewer resources, this would mean less access for people who want to quit. The states who established indoor smoking bans and cigarette taxes to limit and control tobacco use have the lowest mortality rate of smoking-related cancer.

Men From The South Are More Likely To Die From Smoking-Related Cancers

Smoking causes nearly 29 percent of all cancer deaths among Americans over the age of 35, according to a new analysis published in JAMA Internal Medicine. But that doesn’t tell the full story.” Read more…

This is an immediate concern that needs to be addressed by the government especially those who show high numbers in the death toll. It’s important to focus on programs related to tobacco limitations and management.
