The things you do before your workout dictate the gains you will get, just the same as how what you do after matters.

If you’re wondering how that’s possible, just imagine a car. What do you need to make it start? Yes, fuel. Exactly. If you put other liquid in it, let’s say soda or alcohol, to make it start, will it start?
