Restrictive diet, such as low-carb, low-caloric, low-fat diet, may have its benefits, but it’s not worth it in the long run. Not to mention the fact that it’s a freaking challenge to maintain. Most of the time, it will just keep you away from the health benefits (and happiness!) food can offer you.

To be honest, you don’t really need to limit yourself of foods that you really want to eat just because you think they mess up with your system. Well, of course, except for processed foods. But the carbs, calories, fats? Your body actually needs them! This is exactly why we always say “moderation is the key.”

Here are more reasons why restrictive diets don’t work, as discussed by Yana Hempler on her blog:

Why Restrictive Diets Don’t Work

Many times, when people follow restrictive diets, they feel like they are in control of their destiny. Being able to stick to that diet for a long time is a sign of discipline and willpower, right? Wrong.

We are made to feel that if we are not on Diet X, Y, Z, then we will never reach out fitness goals. After all, if we are not depriving ourselves of treats then that means we are failures and we are doomed. Read more…

Additionally, an article on Natural News listed the dangers restrictive diet can do to your body:

Restrictive dieting harms your health in seven major ways

(NaturalNews) Diets aren’t only frequently ineffective; they can also be dangerous. Chronic or frequent dieting can easily lead to a host of nutrient deficiencies and may even encourage significant rebound weight gain. If these risks frustrate you, or you’ve been frustrated by dieting before, read on and choose nutrient-dense diets high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes over plans that insist on paltry portions of bad-for-you foods. Instead of going on a restrictive diet, why not just ensure that you’re eating the right nutrients? Each of them has their own roles in your body, anyway. All you need to do is balance them. Pulptastic compiled these diagrams of hacks to make that possible:

(See diagrams here…)

The real reason why restrictive diets don’t work is that they don’t give you the right amount of nutrients your body needs. They give you enough of one nutrient, but not the other. The result? A messed-up system.

So what should you do? Eat a healthy, balanced diet. And no, processed foods are not included! You also need to increase your daily activities to make sure your metabolism is working just right.
