Could Soda Hurt Your Heart?

We’ve heard and read a lot of news saying soda is bad for us. Well, that’s true. In fact, a report from the journal Circulation last July says it accounts for about 184,000 deaths worldwide every year. It’s no surprise because it contains a lot of chemicals, particularly added sugar, which causes a number of chronic diseases like obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

But could soda hurt your heart? CNN’s correspondent Sandee LaMotte reports about a recent study from the British Medical Journal, which has found that sugary drinks indeed increase one’s risk of heart failure. Let’s read on:

Could soda break your heart?

Guys, listen up: There’s another reason to limit your intake of sugary or artificially sweetened sodas: It might contribute to heart failure. Could soda hurt your heart? The answer is yes, and that’s not really new to us. “Diet” soda isn’t the healthy form, too, so don’t be fooled. They’re all full of chemicals.

Always check the labels. Added sugar is often hidden in other names that people won’t even know, such as dextrose, cane crystals, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, maple syrup, lactose and maltose. Another important thing to keep in mind is that 4 grams of sugar are equivalent to 1 teaspoon. Use this as your guide the next time you buy drinks at the grocery store.

Fact: the average can of soda contains about 150 calories, and this is about 10 teaspoons of sugar. It’s a good thing that more people are choosing to drink healthy, causing a decline in its sales.
