Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disease in which the consumption of gluten – a protein found in wheat, barley and rye – can damage the small intestine. It is also known as coeliac disease, celiac sprue, non-tropical sprue, and gluten sensitive enteropathy.
It also interferes with the body’s nutrient absorption. And the worst part is that it can trigger damage even in just small amounts, so even a sip or bite is a no-no.
Affecting about 1 in 100 people worldwide, it’s no doubt that scientists want to treat celiac disease. Luckily, they have found a way.. But it’s not as great as you think.
A new experiment shows that infecting patients with worms is a way. Read more in this report by Justine Alford on IFL Science:
The Horrifying Way That Scientists Want To Treat Celiac Disease
Celiacs have a pretty rough deal. They can’t eat (normal) pizza or cake, or even drink beer, and at the moment it seems like the most promising treatment involves giving them worms. Yes, scientists have been deliberately infecting patients with parasitic worms. Read more…
So yes, scientists want to treat celiac disease by infecting patients with parasitic worms. It’s not ideal, but so far it’s the only successful method. Note, though, that while a slice of fast food pizza, or even one sip of beer sounds tempting, this method is still not a cure.
As of present, the only treatment for it is going on a lifelong gluten-free diet. If left untreated, it may lead to other diseases and conditions such as anemia, intestinal cancers, type 1 diabetes, osteoporosis, lactose intolerance, nutrient deficiency, and brain disorders. It can even cause infertility and miscarriage.
