Cancer is among the leading cause of death worldwide. A statistical report from the World Health Organization in 2012 says that it caused 8.2 million deaths, with lung, liver, stomach, colorectal, breast and oesophageal cancer being the most common types.

In addition to that, estimates from the American Cancer Society reports that 589,430 people will die out of the expected 1,658,370 new cases in the United States alone this year. You might say it’s getting out of hand.

Good news, though, scientists have recently discovered that the human cells has somewhat like a clock that can determine when you get cancer. Can this prevent or stop the increasing number of cases? Read more in this report by Josh L. Davis on IFL Science:

Scientists Have Discovered “Clocks” Inside Your Cells That Could Determine When You Get Cancer

External factors like the Sun and smoking can harm your DNA by causing mutations, a process that occurs in spurts and bursts. But this process isn’t limited to environmental triggers: As cells grow and divide, internal factors also cause the cell to continuously generate mutations at a constant rate. These steady mutations, which occur in a “clock-like” way, correlate to a person’s age: The older you are, the more mutations you acquire. Read more…

It’s surprising, really, how this clock-like thing can determine when you get cancer. Most of us may have thought that the world already knows everything about the human body, but there is still a lot to discover.

Hopefully, this will develop into something good, most importantly, will help people treat this deadly disease.
