California Health Department: Don’t Eat Dungeness Crab’

It’s the Dungeness crab season, and people are all excited to catch these tasty treats. It’s an annual tradition for those living around the Pacific coast. There’s just one thing, though.

A health warning from the California Health Department says don’t eat Dungeness crab along the coast because it may be contaminated with domoic acid, a toxic substance produced by algae that causes fish and shellfish poisoning. Aside from the common symptoms mentioned like vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, stomach cramps, it can also cause headache, confusion, dizziness, short-term memory loss, seizures, and coma within the next 48 hours after consumption. In worst cases, it can even cause death.

It may be tempting, but please don’t eat Dungeness crab until further notice. Don’t risk it.
