Kidneys are popularly known for their ability to filter toxins and wastes from our blood. Aside from that, they also regulate the body’s fluid levels, help stabilize blood pressure, maintain healthy bones, and more. It’s possible to live with only one, but just imagine the body if you have it missing.
But scientists have found a way to replace that, and in fact, these newly-invented artificial kidneys could be in patients soon, according to this report by Justine Alford on IFL Science:
Artificial Kidneys Could Be In Patients By 2020
More than two years ago, scientists at Vanderbilt University told of their intention to build an artificial kidney that could be implanted into the bodies of those suffering renal failure. Now it seems like they could be getting somewhere, with new advances in nanotechnology potentially putting such a lifesaving system within our grasps. Read more…
Kidney disease is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States, accounting for about 47,000 deaths in the year 2013. The major risk factors are diabetes, high blood pressure, family history of kidney failure, kidney stones, smoking, obesity and cardiovascular disease. Those who are aged 60 and above are at a heightened risk, too.
Watch out for common symptoms of this disease such as fatigue, puffy eyes, increased thirst, as well as swollen face, hands, feet and abdomen, to possibly slow down or prevent its progression. Observe your urine, too. Painful urination, with a pink or bloody color may also be a sign.
Just take care of your kidneys. Even though these artificial kidneys could be in patients soon, nothing beats the real one.
