About 24.9 percent of American adults aged 18 years and above had at least four drinks (for women) and five drinks (for men) in the past year. A new survey has even shown that women who drink a lot are also increasing in number. This does not come as a surprise because the majority of humans turns to alcohol when they want to shut their brain for a night.

But what happens to your brain when you get drunk? Aamna Mohdin discusses about it on IFL Science:

What’s Actually Happening To Your Brain When You Get Drunk?

Whether you’re getting drunk, smashed, plastered or wasted, you’re going to exhibit the number of visible and rather embarrassing effects of getting inebriated. This can range from belting your favourite song to vomiting on your flatmate’s shoes. But what exactly is happening to your body when you’re getting drunk? Read more…

So what happens to your brain when you get drunk? Pleasure and pain. Funny how one drink has two side effects, and it may cause more harm than good.

Aside from the effects in the brain, it may also cause injuries and accidents. In fact, a report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that excessive alcohol consumption causes around 88,000 deaths annually.

More short term effects include slurred speech, diarrhea, drowsiness, vomiting, stomach cramps, blackouts and more. Long term effects, on the other hand, include liver disease, brain damage, sexual problems, high blood pressure, stroke, and alcohol poisoning.

Though, drinking a few shots may be okay, particularly red wine, as it gives positive effects to the body.
