You’ve read the warnings: “Sitting will kill you.” And many of you have sought out standing desks, fearful that a chair will only hasten the end of your mortal existence.
Well, take a deep breath, relax and add this to the mix of research out there on the pros and cons of standing at work: a study published Tuesday in the International Journal of Epidemiology found that sitting is not associated with an increased risk of dying. Read more…
True, sitting for extended periods of time may increase your risk of death, but so as standing, laying down, among other stationary postures. These will mess up with your system, slowing down your metabolism and break down of fats and sugars. Therefore, they also increase your risk of obesity and other lifestyle diseases.
So how do we solve that problem? Like what we always tell you, increasing your physical activity is important. Try walking a couple of minutes a day. It could be to your work, shop, your friend’s house, or with your dog. You can also take the stairs instead of the elevator. And instead of sitting there posting some weird stuff on your social media sites, why not get up and exercise? An hour or less a day will help you big time.
