Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in humans, with an estimated 8.2 million deaths worldwide in the year 2012. And unfortunately, until now there is no clear way to cure this deadly disease, despite the efforts of health experts around the world. Chemotherapy, among other ways of treatment, is never a hundred percent effective, especially when it’s on the last stages.
Now a recent study has shown that elephants almost never get cancer. What makes them unique? Can this fact help figure out the long-running question on how to cure cancer?
Know more about it in this report on New Scientist:
Elephants almost never get cancer thanks to multiple gene copies
It’s an elephant–sized mystery. Big animals like elephants live longer and their cells have to divide more, so you would expect them to be more susceptible to cancer. But that doesn’t seem to be the case – a phenomenon that has become known as Peto’s paradox. Read more…
Sorry, peeps! But the fact that elephants almost never get cancer because of their multiple genes has “no obvious implications for treatment” in humans. But what do we know, right? Maybe somewhere down the road. There are so many scientific discoveries in this era, which only proves the “nothing is impossible” line.
Although the cure remains unknown, you can start reducing your risk for it as early as now. Eating a healthy diet, increasing your physical activity and getting enough sleep are some of the best ways to protect yourself, not only from cancer, but also from other chronic diseases like diabetes and heart diseases.
